What has been the most effective thing you've cut out in your DFW quest?

I'm not sure if the title makes sense, but I was wondering what has been the most significant thing you have cut out of your lifestyle (or reduced) that has helped you towards being a DFW?
I guess I'm looking at my life at the moment and what areas I can and perhaps should cut out on....I can hear my husband shouting chocolate!!!!

Just being more aware of what is going in and out of my account has been the most effective thing for me. That and spending all my free time on here of course has saved me loads as I don't go out so much!!!Debt Free Nerd No. 89, LBM: April 2006, Debt at highest (Sept 05): £40,939.96

I saved over £800 a year through cutting out Diet Coke!!!
I feel SO much better its unbelievable, physically, emotionally, and financially! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Wow lynzpower! I'm a Diet Coke addict so maybe I should take a leaf out of your book!
I hate spending money on clothes now and it was once my full time hobby!!0 -
As molanole said just being more aware of what is going in and out of my bank account, as lynz said, the diet coke addiction (I had an odd one though, only liked it from a can and had to be the "real thing" no own brand- cost me a fortune!) the magazine I bought with my diet coke, the £50 a week on food shopping and throwing most of it away, buying lunch at work every day. I have taken a look through my spending diary, I have gone from spending £200 per month on food, lunches, diet coke and sundries like magazines to around £80.Saving for an early retirement!0

Obviously stopping spending money on designer clothes and handbags has had a big effect however I think the most significant thing has been the grocery bill. I think that I have overspent on that for the last 20 years!!. Not any more.

Is that stuff really addictive then? How much is it a bottle? You must have been drinking loads. For me it is tea, cannot get enough.
Lost Miffi's thread there a bit. For me it is going to be Sky and Sky Plus. They will go in a couple of weeks and I will sorely miss sky plus but will be £47 a month better off...that's £564 a year. When I get rid of my van it will be another £300 per month."grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can and the wisdom to know it's me"

Food we were spending well over £500 a month
And ebay, I don't browse anymore, you end up thinking you need things that you wouldn't have even considered buying in the shops. Those little items really added up, at one point I was spending £500-£600 a month all on CC
I now just look if i'm intending to buy something from the shops to see if I can get it cheaper. :A

smilermonkey to get italics the second I in a square bracket needs to be preceded by a slash (despite being a computer programmer in a previous life I can never remember which is forward and which is back)... it might also help if you make the I's capital.
There is a handy I button on the toolbar you can use which will do it for you too.
Now, what's the betting I post this and my italics don't work either and I look like a right spanner?! :rotfl:
Hope that helps anyway xxDue 26th April 2008 :j0 -
Walking more and driving less. Try to use the car only when necessary rather than jumping in and driving off on a whim (and possibly also to somewhere well within walking distance
