My September challenge

Hi there,

have been reading loads of your posts and got inspired so this month I am going to challenge myself. I've never done this before, so this is quite weird. I've budgeted a total of £200 for the month, that is for me (pregnant), husband and three cats.

My meal plan for September is:

4 times Spaghetti Quornaise
4 times Chilli con Quorni & Rice
4 times Sunday lunch (some quorn stuff), potatoes, veg
1 time Green lentil curry & Rice
3 times Red lentil curry & Rice
1 time Roast Veg with Couscous (store cupboard)
1 time Roast Veg with Puy Lentils (store cupboard)
2 times LMcCartney Sausage Rolls with salad
3 times Eggs, beans, veg sausages & toast
2 times Spanish Omelette
2 times Egg fried rice w. Salad
2 times Stir fry w. rice
1 time Coconut veg curry

that's 30 meals if I counted correctly.

I will do a monthly shop with my husband on Saturday (Friday's meal is store cupboard) and then only stock up on veg, fruit and bread once a week, milk gets delivered to the door (£2,30 a week). I might overbuy this month in the start, but those things aren't really perishable, so I can use it in October. The shops I go to are all located within a few metres from each other, this makes it quite easy!

My big shopping list for September is, my bet is that we will spend £130 on this shop:

Aldi:
3 packs Spaghetti
24 cans of tomatoes
Olive Oil
4 cans of kidney beans
12 eggs
3 cans baked beans
1 kilo sugar
2 Washing up Liquids
2 packs toilet paper
2 packs of muesli bars
4 packs of Aldi style weetabix
2 pots of spread
4 pots of cream cheese
4 packs of Cheddar
2 kilo Coffee
2 packs of cat litter
16 boxes of cat food
1 bos of dry cat food
1 jar of Strawberry jam
1 tube of Tomato puree
3 rolls of bin bags
1 bleach
1 ketchup
2 Shower Gels
24 cans of beer
2 loafs of bread

Indian Supermarket:
Garlic
2 packs of onions
dried basil
Basmati Rice
4 kg of potatoes
5 cans of coconut milk
White Vinegar
2 kgs red lentil (will last longer than one month)
1 kg bananas
1 kg apples
grapes
peppers
salad

Farmfoods:
3 mixed frozen veg

Pet Superstore
2 big bags of catsan (we mix that with the cheap Aldi brand, with a view to replace completely)

  • I just totted it up in Sainsburys I would spend £180 for the lot, so will see how much cheaper I get it at the shops I'll go to!

    Hello :hello:

something you may already know but if you bur dried TVP it can work out much cheaper than Quorn and i think its fine in dishes which have lots of flavour (esp chilli con quorni)
  • Thanks for that, what is TVP? Sorry, my ignorance. I usually buy the quorn frozen from Farmfoods, which works out quite cheap. But if there is something even cheaper I am up for it.

I think it stands for textured veg protein, it comes dried in a box for about £1 sold in sainsburys and Tesco's.
I'm not sure if it works out very cheap if you already use farm foods but I find it great for keeping in the cupboard. Use it just like Quorn and it rehydrates in the dish. I normally get about 4 meals from a box as it doubles up as it rehydrates. You can also rehydrate it seperately before you use it using stock and other flavours. I can't do links to other posts but it has been mentioned quite a bit on OS in the past!

  • It all looks very organised. I just don't know if I would stick to it. How do you know what you will fancy in 30 days time?

I think the easy way to do it is to plan a number of each meal that you know you'll always fancy, a few meals that you might want on a whim, a few snacky any time bits... and to leave a fiver out for when none of that appeals and you have to buy something else. :rotfl:

  • will go and try that now. Thanks. My challenge will be to at least write it all down and give myself the chance with my get of jail £5 hopefully I will manage.

Brilliant, think I will give that a go £1 for 4 dishes is really good!
