Computer 'D' drive not working.

Options
Hi,
I'm looking for some help and advice. I've tried the Help and Support system on the computer but it doesn't provide any specific solutions.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 3000.
Operating system - Microsoft XP Home Edition. supplied by Dell - Service Pack 3 installed December 2009.

The problem:- The D drive is functioning mechanically. Put a disc in and close it and the light flashes but nothing appears on the screen and no programme starts and nothing further happens.
When the system is re-started, The DVD-CD ROM drive is listed under "device Manager" on the Computer Management screen. double click on the DVD/CD title shows the driver name - Sony CD-RW CRX217E.and says the device is working properly. Entering a disc in the D drive prompts another screen which asks what you want to do with the disc data but once an option is selected, the screen disappears and the DVD/CD ROM disappears from the folder list. I have tried re installing the driver which makes no difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
