Well done for going back Pandora. I've just joined my local gym but I've got no idea where to start as I've never been to a gym before. I've attended a yoga class but I've not ventured into the gym yet. Has anyone got any advice on what type of rountines to start on for someone who isn't that fit? I was thinking of hiring a personal trainer to get me started but I'm a bit scared of doing that to be honest.

Don't be scared...I joined a gym a couple of months ago. I had never set foot in one before and was petrified!! My membership came with personal training sessions thrown in even though I didn't wnat them!! However, I found them to be very useful and have since purchased some more sessions because I really feel that they are benefitting me. I had an image of some fit little oik in lycra shouting at me but he's not like that at all...he does push me, but not beyond my limits and he shows me new things every session which stops me getting bored with the regime.

However, you may not even need to purchase personal training sessions if you don't want to. Most gyms will have a member of staff on hand who will give you an induction, show you how the machines work and suggest routines to suit you and the goals you want to achieve.

Just do it...you won't regret it. This is coming from the person who was sure she would be the first person to actually die of embarrassment at being seen exercising in a public place...and who is now in the gym up to 6 times a week ;)

I must admit I'm really more of a classes person than a gym user but that may be cos this is a very big gym, with lots of serious body building types and some of the machines look quite daunting.

After I've got back into the swing a bit more and checked I can actually do an hour's exercise, I may book a session with one of the staff to do another induction. There is also a pool which I've never used as I'm not that keen on swimming but once again maybe if I got into the habit of a short swim at the end of a session it would grow on me.

Well I've not been since Sunday as I've had a hectic week so far. I must try to go tomorrow, as even when busy I do feel the benefits from a session.
