hi there
wondering if you can offer me some advice.
long story, but moved in with my partner last year and brought with me around about £18000 worth of debt. THis was built up of a loan with Alliance and Leicester and a loan with Northern Rock (unsecured at same rate as my mortgage at the time). And to date I have done nothing about either of these debts. I know this is completely wrong and it was never far away in my mind, but there has been a lot going on in my life e.g. miscarriage this time last year, fell pregnant again (baby born in June) my grandfather died tragically etc etc.I pretty sure the companies I owe the money too will not be interested in the above.
Last week I received a letter from a debt collector re the alliance and leicester and Im now panicking big style.
My partner knew of these debts but we havent spoken about it since last year, but im now going to have to bring it up again. Im scared.
The house we're in is in his name, we have a joint bank account and the car is in his name.
Can they touch our bank account?
Im completely panicking now, and am worried what to do next. We cant afford to be paying back hundreds of pounds a month.
I live in Scotland so I know some things are different to the laws etc in England.
Hope you can offer me some advice.
Thankyou in advance.

Hi there and welcome
Just to clarify, when was the last time you paid any of these two loans? It may help if you posted a statement of affairs - see this thread on what to include http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=107280 - and we may be able to help you sort out some savings.
Also, the CAB, CCCS, national debt line and payplan are all charities that can help you deal with your creditors.
You are in the right place :grouphug:Leason learnt :beer:0 -
First of all, don't panic. Difficult I know, but you will not think clearly if you are panicking. I think that anything is in his name, can't be touched. Not sure about the bank account though.
Secondly make sure that you write back to the debt collector right away and tell them that you will only deal with them by letter. Debt collectors are generally right toe rags (to put it mildly) and you don't need them ringing you several time a day, every day, to put pressure on you , when you have a new baby.
Thirdly talk to the other lender asap, so that that debt doesn't go to debt collectors. Write them a letter and enclose a £1 and say that this is a token payment until you have sorted out a repayment plan, keep doing this whilst you negotiate what that will be.
Finally enjoy your lovely baby. Remember freecycle.org is a great pleace to find FREE baby gear, only have to go and pick it up. I got rid of my pram this way, to another couple.
It will get better
best of luck
chevI want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
