Hi
I have recieved aletter today informing me that an attachment of earning order as been sent to my employer. The bill apparently is relating to 2007.
The account number is different than my current council tax account numberr and I do not recall this bill at all. I have lived in my current address for 8 years.
Please ca anyone advise me, I am worried sick and embarrassed that they ahve contacted my employers. Not to mention how they know my details and even my employee number is on thier.

The bill is £781.93p.

Any help will be greatly appreciated Thanks

You need to check with the council. Were you made aware of a hearing?

Hi - To get an attachment of earnings, the council must have been to court to get a liability order.

    1. Have you had any letters about this before finding out about it from your employer?
    2. Do you have any evidence that you have paid council tax for 2007? could you have been mistakenly paying for 2006 or an earlier year.

I would contact CCCS for advice - I would have thought you need to speak with the council to see if you can find out if the reference number on the order relates to your council tax property.

If you have lived at the proeprty since 2007 and you are receiving current council tax demands then it is likely that you have been billed correctly and the court summons issued correctly however you need to contact the local authority for further details regarding this balance and what monies have gone where.

From experience (I work in council tax recovery) its unlikely for that the records have misplaced monies for only one year but its often the case the actual debt is from another year and the payments, for example, made for 2007 have been paid to 2006, the amount due would be the same only on a different year.

Did you receive council tax benefit or have a change of circumstances at any point (discounts, exemptions etc) ?

  • Hi
Thanks very much for the replies/
I had a chance of circumstances in 2009 and i have 3 different bill all for different amounts.
I have checked back on everything and it does look like there may have been a mistake. However I got in a bit of a mess with the payments and some payments where made to the bailliff and some to the council.
I am more worried that my pay day is on the 25th and that the payment will be deducted then.
Is it likely that I may be able to negotiate repayments and that they will not take the money from my wages.
Is it worth ringing them and asking? Thanks for your support and for answering my silly questions just panicking

You can ask but they dont have to.

Its rare that Attachment of Earnings Orders are withdrawn (I probably withdraw no more than 4-5 per year) if its got to that stage because its an effective method of securing payment.

The employer will process the payment from the next available payroll, most big employers will likely have done this months pay run by now and it would probably miss this months pay but the only people who can confirm this would be your payroll depart.

  • Hi
Thanks for your reply - what I dont understand is why I hanvt recieved any reminder about this? I understand thought like you said the attachment of earnings will get them the money back so I suppose thats the way it needs to be.

I will ring them tomorrow and see if I can ask for further information - and If I owe it then I i,ll have to skimp for a few months.

    Thanks again
