Extended Warranty Query

Options
I know for so many items Extended Warranties aren't worth it. However, my parents purchased a Gas Cooker almost 1 year ago for £500.

They have received a letter from Mastercare asking them to take out an extended warranty for either 3 years (£71) or 4 years (£87).

Now I'm in the mind to think that £21.75 for 4 years is good peace of mind for an expensive product as this. I say this because we know of people that have had cooker problems within 5 years of purchasing a new cooker.

My main question is, is it possible to get an extended warranty with another company for a cheaper price?

Also, the warranty states that the cooker will be replaced if it breaks down. Does normal household insurance cover this?

Sorry for such a long winded question but I've been trawling the message board for a couple of days now but haven't found anything remotely close to my query.

Thanks

  • For expensive kitchen / household appliances, I think it is worthy to take out some forms of protection plans for them. I have service plan to cover my kitchen & household appliances,  it covers any labour and parts costs when appliances need to be repaired, in some cases it also offers new for old (provided appliances is less than 5 years old I think.)

Manufacturer's extended warranty quite often is more expensive, and not necessarily better plan. I think you should shop around, compare the terms and conditions of the offers available before deciding whether your parents want to take up the offer from Mastercare.

British Gas offers Kitchen/household appliances service plan, also Domestic & General Insurance does similar sort of thing too.

Domestic & General will offer you an insurance policy AFTER your appliance has broken down, via https://www.flyingtoolbox.com which will cover the cost of the repair and any repairs in the following 12 months.

The only catch seems to be if the repair is not economic, they will give you the premium back. I paid £100 to them when my 2 year old washing machine went wrong, and they paid the repair engineer about £400 for a new motor and controller (the repair engineer didn't think they would pay, but it is a built in machine, which are surprisingly expensive, and thus was economic to repair). I presume they 'win' when it is only a blown fuse.

  • Thanks for the info.

There seems to be very little difference between the quote my father received and the ones I've seen on the net so my father's going to go with Mastercare.

    Thanks again.
