Passing credit checks on an IVA. Help please.

Does anyone have any experience - good or bad - on applying for things that require credit checks whilst in the middle of an IVA?

Just wondered what difficulties I face trying to do things like get a new contract mobile, hire purchase on a car, or simply renting a new flat.

Anyone?

New mobile: You might have to go with PAYG or have a call cap. Some will give you you a contract if you pay a deposit up front.

Buying a car on HP: I'm sorry to say that you will not get credit unless you go to one of these "guaranteed" credit places. This is not a good idea because they hike up the prices and the interest to as much as 30%+. If you're in a DMP you cannot afford a car loan, why aren't you putting the £100+ per month into your DMP?

Getting a flat: This should not be too much of a problem, the usual sticking point is previous landlords' references. If these are OK you probably won't get credit checked. If you rent privately it's most likely that your landlord won't have access to your credit file anyway.

All the above is dependant on what's actually on your credit file. Sometimes a DMP does not necessarily result in major credit problems though it could lead to embarrassing questions.

Thanks Dr. Shoe! I'm on an IVA rather than a DMP, which no doubt makes it more difficult? My requirement to get a car on Hire Purchase is unusual as my employer wants to give me a £200 per month car allowance. This money will only be paid if I use it to finance a car.

    Anyone else with advice?

Hi James! we're in an IVA and we were turned down after a credit check when we tried to get a mobile on contract for our son.

Thanks. I'm on Orange already but I think when you 'upgrade' you're subject to a credit check which is a bit of a bummer. I'll just have to try and hope.

Hello mate, I'm not too sure on that. I got my contract phone when I was 18 and had a good rating. My rating now is crap, yet I've been upgraded / changed contracts with Vodafone twice in the last year or so... so I don't think they re-check you

How about explaining to your boss that HP is not an option available to you but ask that the company provide you a car I.E the company gets the car HP and pays for it, they just cut out the middle man - you. That way if you change jobs a few years down the line your not left with another debt when the car allowance stops.

Thanks for the idea but unfortunately I dont qualify for the car, just the car allowance. I have always had it in mind to ask though, but I dont fancy my chances.

    Hi James

I'm in a Trust Deed which is similar to an IVA and I was able to upgrade my mobile but when I tried changing networks I got refused straight away so I've stayed with the company, I did give them 4 weeks written notice but when I got the refusal I called them and they offered me a pretty good deal so I took it.
I was told that I would not be able to get credit of any kind until I have been discharged from my Trust Deed. I think the IVA might be the same.
