    That would be very useful. However, you'd really need it to be judged by people that are independent of the garages and also competent mechanics themselves.

    Apart from the obvious possibility of self-promotion by the garages, there's also the issue that many people simply don't know whether a garage has done a good job or not. A few weeks ago I took my car for a service+MOT at a local back-street garage. I had expected to car to go through with no issues, but they ended up charging me £100 extra because of some bits and pieces that failed the MOT, e.g. the exhaust blowing, which they welded up. I told them to go ahead with it because I wanted the car back on the road, but I haven't recommended them to anyone because I really don't know if they were being honest or not.
