'Full and Final settlement' advice please

1. I have recieved a letter from connaught collections titled 'last low discount opportunity', which says WE PAY 60%, YOU PAY 40%. However, the letter does not state that it would be a f+f settlement. It does not clearly state that the remainder of the debt would be written off and marked as settled. I am going to phone them tommorow but how should I word my request? If they refuse to provide further clarification in writing, should I pay it anyway and just keep the letter I have and hope for the best? Perhaps I could request a copy of my credit file a week later, if it has not been updated phone them back and ask them to update it to show as settled. Anyone have any experience in this?

2. The other question I have is whether it is better to phone creditors rather than send them letters. I sent 3 f+f letters on the 1st of june and have only recieved one reply. Phoning them would be much quicker. Once a fee is agreed, I could then ask them to send me the letter I need. My only concern is that perhaps the letters are read by more high-ranking people in the company.

(Ironically, I never sent a f+f letter to connaught collections, their offer came out of the blue)

First DO NOT have a telephone conversation with a DCA.
I have had the same letter, they are the latest name for 1st credit. Use the search facility on this web site, and read about the people you are dealing with.
What I am doing is paying them £1 a day via bank transfer, there is no way I can afford to settle on 40% and as you point out they don't really make things clear. If I was you I would send them a copy of the letter they sent to you, with a cover letter (you can get one from this forum) asking for a reply with all the terms and conditions you need such as "settled" status on the debt.

Additionally, have you admitted liability for the debt?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the debt is mine.

I was thinking that perhaps the fact that the letter clearly says 'WE PAY 60%' might be enough.

Anyone else think I should not be phoning them? I have phoned dca's in the past and most have been pretty reasonable to be honest.
