wired network doesn't work - help?

Hi NiVZ,
have disabled ZA, re-input those TCP-IP nos. and done the ping, and the reply I got was destination host unreachable (packets: sent = 4 received = 4 lost = 0). Windows Firewall is running on both PCs and they already had file and printer sharing ticked in their settings. Neither PC is currently able to see the other.
Hammyman, the password protected sharing in Network and Sharing Centre, explains that if you have password protection on other people can't access the files attached to the PC or the public folder so I had it set to off. I haven't put anything in the public folder yet on the desktop (I don't think anyway) as if the PCs can't even see each other anyway it wouldn't be much use would it?
I honestly feel like banging my head against the wall at the moment, you know when you try so many things and follow instructions and it just won't work...0 -
Thanks closed, I have to anyway as I only have one port on the laptop in which to put the crossover cable, so I have to unplug the modem to plug that it. Cheers.0

Anyone else able to suggest ideas to sort out this crossover connection? Thanks.0

Hi All,
just in case anyone else had a similar problem, I seem to have found the solution. The only reason this didn't apply to me before is I've never used this and as I said I'm not a computer technogeek...I bought a cheap mini USB flash drive, and I'm copying all the data onto that to transfer to the laptop. Wish I'd known I could do this before buying various cables and trying unsuccessfully to network!0
