How much notice to give?

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster here!
I have been working, part time for company A since November 2007. I haven't been happy for a while and recently I was 'head hunted' by Company B. I'm not sure how much notice I would need to give Company A and i'd rather not let them know that I'm thinking of leaving yet.
Is there a standard amount of notice or does it vary depending on the company? I can give more detail if needed.
Thank you!

Notice will be whatever is in your terms of employmentIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

It says '1 week for each year of continuous employment'. So if I started in Nov. 07 that would make it 2 Weeks? Does the fact that I had 9 months maternity leave affect it in any way?0

Thats statutory for employer what does it say about employee notice?
it might be matched but that is not that common IME.0 -
Quote-
"If you wish to terminate your employment, you must immediately give at least one week's notice in writing. You are entitled to receive the following periods of notice of termination of your employment except in cases where summary dismissal may be justified."
It then gives various periods of continuous employment and I fall under
"2 years or more, but less than 12 years - 1 week for each year of continuous employment"
I want to make sure I give the right amount of notice if I go, because my store manager has a habit of trying to do people out of their holiday pay when they leave, and I'm not giving him any excuses!0 -

It says it all in one sentence. You need to give one weeks notice.
forget the word immediately, give one weeks notice one week before you want to leave.
All the rest of it is for the employers notice to you.
Simple as that.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
It's also worth setting out what holiday you think you're entitled to as you give notice, and stating your preference for what happens to it.
eg you work 5 days a week, your leave year runs from January, you have the statutory 5.6 weeks annual leave including bank holidays, you have not taken any leave this year and you have worked all the bank holidays so far, and you want to give notice for the end of June, you have 2.8 weeks leave. Since it's likely your manager will want you to work that last week, you say "Please accept this as a week's notice, my last working day will be 30th June, because I have not taken any leave this year I am entitled to 14 days' paid leave, and I would like this to be added to my final salary".
That's not worded particularly well, but once you've set out that you know what you're entitled to, I feel it makes it more likely you'll get it.

And to add that, however early in a day you hand in your notice, the one week technically starts the next day.0
