Cowboy 'IT EXPERT'

Options
I had a problem with my PC, and got a number for an 'IT expert' who came round and said I needed a new motherboard. This was fitted at his home, but since then, my USB ports don't work properly, nor does my eSATA port. He denies there is anything wrong, and wont do anything else..........Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

Sounds like he hasn't connected the new motherboard properly, that or the new board is faulty. If he refuses to come back to you to look at it then take it to him and show him exactly what the problem is. If it really is his fault then he should repair it again for free.

Don't work "properly" or just don't work? Do any ports at all work? Or is it just the ones at the front of the case??

If its the ones on the front of the computer only, he has not connected them to the motherboard. If the back don't work then maybe he has not installed the correct drivers or there is a fault.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds like its a completely different motherboard, which means hes probably put a really slow CPU in too

Goto DEVICE MANAGER, any YELLOW EXCLAMATION marks means you need drivers

Press the WINDOWS key and the PAUSE/BREAK keys together
This should bring up a screen telling us your PROCESSOR speed and INSTALLED RAM

What should they be and what are they now?

If I were you id be taking him to court
If it was me id be doing something else entirely ;)

You need to provide more information, what do you mean dont work properly? .... are they front or rear USB Ports?

Look in the Device manager as shown above.

The OP Said a new motherboard had been fitted!!!
I would love to know how you have come to the conclusion that a slower CPU has been put in ?????? There is no information in the original post to suggest this. The issue is with USB ports and nothing to do with speed.....

Thats a little drastic and a total waste of time at this point. Lets try and solve the problem first

Good advice, but be aware that sometimes (generally when a device is running the default MS drivers that are built into Windows) it will be shown as "Working normally" with no yellow exclamation mark, when it is not actually working.

The best thing to do is determine the make & model of the mobo, got to the makers website and get all of the drivers for your OS.

    ok

    Ill play your game

New motherboard has been fitted. Ive known MANY dodgy computer cowboys not only swop motherboards but cpus (And ram) in the process
Hell, ive even known them take images of drives and put smaller drives in
I never said a slower cpu HAS been fitted, im trying to determine just how much of a cowboy this particular guy is

The 2nd part I do agree with, but as I stated, id do something else personally. I was just stating within the law (Which I wouldnt personally stick to)

  • - download and put CPUz on your puter and let the group know whan you have done so !

    - someone will then walk~you~through what to do
    - then a more objective [ remote ] diagnosis can be given on MOBO / drivers etc
