What should I expect for my money at a gym?

Thanks again everyone. I've spoken to Virgin Active and asked them to bin the contract as I shouldn't pay while I can't actually set foot in their gym.
Needless to say I won't be going back!
I've also armed myself with some info from MSE and think I hold all the cards as I was sold a product 'not fit for purpose'. The point one of you made about whether or not the gym would have been insured when I used it is also one I could pull out if there are any further problems.
Going to have a look round the council gyms tonight

Well done! Ours is reasonable clean, showers are good, although I usually prefer going home to shower, as then I don't need to carry my body wash/shampoo/towel with me.
I think I tried 4 council run gyms (not from the same council) and none of them as bad as jennie experienced. Yes, we do get kids in this gym, but they are usually supervised and even though odd one decides to use all different types of machines within 10 minutes of being there running from one to another, they are not there forever. You can always find out times when these things for kids are run and come at a different time.
My colleague recently joined one local to hers and she is well impressed compared with what she had at her previous one. That one even has outside track for running!Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0
