Conflicting eye tests.

Hi,
I have bee getting headaches and had noticed that my eyes feel strained. This is very noticable if someone stands close to me. I had an eye test yesterday and the results were as follows:
R: SPH -0.25, CYL:-0.25, AXIS: 95.0
L: SPH -0.25, CYL (blank), AXIS: (blank).
The optician said that I did not need a prescription and to take regular breaks if I am on a computer or reading. His test did not take very long and he told me that I have pigmentation on the back of my eyes, which he could see on the photo he taken on the back of his eyes. I asked him what this was and he said it is probably a birth mark but I could tell that it might possibly be something else but didnt say. He told me to come back in a year to keep an eye on it.I felt very rushed and I was alittle concerned as he had written on my receipt/results to come back in 2 years, which was different to what he had told me in my appointment.

Today I mad an appointment with a different optician and my results are entirely different! She has prescribed my glasses for 'concentrating tasks'.
R: SPH +0.50, CYL:-0.25, AXIS: 100
L: SPH +0.50, CYL:-0.25 , AXIS: 35

Firstly, does anyone know what to make of this? Does anyone know anyway to sort this kind of thing out? Other than going to annother optician and having to pay for annother test.

:(

when your eyes were being tested did you feel that you have a problem with focusing near or far. the first prescription indicates shortsightedness, ie difficult to see faraway as the numbers are a minus. the 2nd pres. has a plus, meaning longsighted so hard to focus near.
keep a note of which one feels worse and brings on headache more. sometime when working on computers, not only is it a strain but your eyes have to refocus to see the usual environment and puts another strain.
i find Boots and Dolland & Aitchison are really good. and i have not had a good experience with Specsavers. Tesco are not too bad but their tests don't seem as extensive. i don't know about Vision express - or what other opticians there are as i always go back to the first two choices. As everyones health and eyes are different i think they can see many different things at the back of the eye - if it is not considered serious don't worry. i was feeling worried when the back of my eye seemed to have something and i had linking questions like diabetes etc. but i don't have any symptoms of anything. they are just being careful.
the prescriptions look to me that you have a very mild shortsighted ness which doesn't really need glasses. but the other prescription tallys with what you mention about it being difficult to focus when things are near you, for which you may find it helpful to wear glasses for doing close up stuff.
if you are more concerned why not take each others prescripton to the other optician and query them ( though i understand they might not be happy about that). keep a look out for voucher that offer free sight test - Dolland & aichinson and Tesco's usually have some offer going.

    sorry can't be much help...
  • both prescriptions are very very minor and most opticians wouldnt prescribe glasses for them if someone has their eyes tested two seperate days a prescription difference will be found but if you feel the prescription will help have them made up where u had the second eye test and if theyre no good keep going back to them to advise this.

I recently learnt that Diabetes(something to do with the pressure in the eyes) can make a difference to eye test results, may be idea to go to doctors to have migraines checked out.
Making small changes, hoping they will last....
  • those are minor differences, opticians basically make the best guess on what to prescribe based on your responses to the sight test. Its your eyes that got a different test result, I.e, you said you were straining so the second optician went slightly stronger.

They write 2 years on the form because that's the government recommended time. if you were claiming a free eyetest you wouldn't be allowed another free one for two years, regardless of being recommended to have one next year. so they put that on the form.

if you tell them you were unhappy with the test, they will do it again. (or you wont buy any glasses from them!!)
It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

Both are tiny prescriptions and usually wouldn't warrant glasses, if you're having problems up close they usually add on a "reading add" which is written underneath the distance prescription on the GOS form (Scotland).

You can always get the glasses made up and see if they help.

    This is incorrect:
I get my eyes tested yearly as recommended and have never had to pay for an eye test. It's on my records that I need to be tested yearly.
