First time debt after car accident.

Hi Guys,

I can't believe I am posting on here, I never thought I'd be in this position. I am £419.54 in debt on my credit card with 22.90% APR. My 0% for 9 months new card should arrive soon so I can transfer the balance (I assume this is the best thing to do!).

The reason I am in debt is because I had a car accident in April this year (which was the 3rd parties fault) injured my neck, back, shoulders, and bladder with further complications from reactions to the drugs I have been put on. My injuries mean I have been off work for over 2 months now, am currently on half-pay which will be cut again soon. I know that I am in the very lucky position that eventually I will get compensation, but as my injuries are still bad the claim is likely to be ongoing for sometime, and it still means that at the moment I am panicking. I am inevitably going to end up in my overdraft soon this month (it costs £1 a day).

Just wanted to share my story and ask for any advice. Thanks for reading my post. :A
Hmmm will add up debt and stick on on later!

    It's only £400.
Take a small loan and pay it.

but i'd have to pay intrest on the loan so wouldn't it be better to transfer it on a 0% card like I am planning?

    Hi Jellybaby!

I would transfer to the 0% card - but also work out a revised budget for the next few months to see if you can not only clear the card during its 0% period, but also continue to pay any other bills. Also try not to rack up any money on the card you already have once its empty!

I'm not sure if you can, but when I was involved in a car accident, there was the option for intermediatory payments to help out until the payment was settled - especially handy if you have to pay to travel to doctors, physio, buy medication etc, just helps things ticking over!

Hope you feel better soon, Nats

thanks nats, yeah i am due an interim payment, but it seems to be taking forever to go through, my work just won't seem to get their act together and send my sick notes to my solicitor. I have already had an advanced payment for physio. Can't wait to get my 0% card, I hoped it would arrive in the post today but no luck, just spent another £140 on renewing my prepayment prescription certificate and medication which I can't get on the NHS, but they are essentials. I had better update my debt!!! :rotfl:

    Hi Jelly,

Send an email to your HR department pointing out that their failure to send the correct information on is causing a delay in your receipt of the interim payment. Explain that their actions, coupled with the soon-to-be-reduced salary, is going to result in you incurring charges and bank fees. Notify them that you will expect them to meet those charges, since it is their actions that are causing the delays and problems. Explain that the additional stress this is causing you is detrimental to your ongoing recovery, and you know that it is purely an oversight on their part which can no doubt be rectified immediately.

The reason for the wording - an employer has a duty of care to their employees. If their actions are detrimental to the physical or mental wellbeing of a person they are liable. If the person is already incapacited due to injury, the liability goes up drastically! You are already suing the person responsible for your accident, they won't want you suing them.

    Good luck.
