Life and Critical Illness106.47 ( seems very high, mines only 31 a month and im a smoker) jesus, really?? When we bought the house our financial advisor said advised us on it - might have to look into that.
If you bought this cover via your broker chances are its the most expensive going. the one they offered me was about twice as much as what im paying and the buildings & contents was 110 a month, but I got my own at 24 a month ( ish)_:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
hi snoogiewoogie, welcome to MSE! I think that the expert advice already given should see you on your way, but I just wanted to say that you have come to the right place to get help! Have a look at some of the other forums on here, such as Moneysaving Old Style - really helpful for recipes and cutting down on groceries and shopping.
Please keep posting and let us know how you get on!Official DFW Nerd Club #20  Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts

I am 26 weeks pregnant and due to start mat leave soon, which obviously will be a big cut in the income. On top of that my husband's contract doesn't get extended and he needs to find a job!
Below is a list with our monthly outgoings
Sky 36.16 as said by others this can be can cancelled
Broadband 29.99This can be cheaper or even go on dial up for a while
Student Loan 78.6 If this is yours then as said before you can get the payments deferred for a while
TV Licence 11.07
BT 23
Children Soc 5 This is not a priority to you at the moment - cancel it
Secured Loan 328.67
Sainsbury Energy 139
Water 23.44
Pet Insurance 17.3 I understand that this is worthwhile but you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere
Council Tax 94
Mortgage 803.25 Ring your mortgage company and ask to make interest only payments for a few months - I had to do this for a while and the mortgage company were fine about it
Life and Critical Illness106.47 You must be able to get this for cheaper
House Insurance 25.62
Mobile Phone 50
Petrol (pre mat leave) 120
Bus fare 56
1891.57
Income now:
Husband: 1785
Me: 1924 (when on mat leave 108 per week)
This will leave us with around 356 to live on when on maternity leave. I know we will just have to cut back and cut back, but I am sooo worried that we will lose the house, have to claim bankruptcy.
What can I do other than just panick
DOnt panic you will be fine but you will need to make huge cuts. What do you spend on food etc?😁0 -
snoogiewoogie wrote:BT 23 - we have a BT line because I was told you need it to have broadband, is that not correct?
You dont always need a phoneline, I am with Telewest Broadband, and as it comes thru on cable I dont have a landline.
I pay £23.49 for unlimited broadband and Telewest TV, installation is usually free for new customers too.Debt Free as of 17/01/2009 Turtle Power!!

Try Freecycle and Gumtree for baby bits, we got some great bits for our little girl when we found out about the above and half still had the tags on them as they were bought, put in the wardrobe and then found when the baby was too big for them, and at worst just wash them beforehand. Same with buggies, changing tables, most people look after that sort of stuff so it looks almost new anyway.0

Hi,
According to my calcs, with your current income you have £410.48 per week to spend on anything else including food. When you go on mat leave this will drop to £74.48 without cutting back.
There are some ways to cut back;
Get rid if sky and go digital
If your mobile company does free bb do that
forget about the student loan, this will need not be paid on a low income
Stop the charitable donation
Cancel the pet insurance or get rid of the pet
Cancel critical illness insurance and go for joint life only; you'll need this after the baby is born. I've budgetted £20 in the figures
Also you have not mentioned car running costs; is it a company car?
Assuming these cuts you will have £122 to spend per week on anything including food. Start a spending diary and begin each week with £120. Write down every thing you spend in it and carry forward to the next week. You'll be fine.
The new figures are as follows:
income weekly monthly
self 108.00 0.00
partner 1785.00
total 108.00 1785.00
411.93 divided by 4.33
519.93 total weekly income
spend weekly monthly
rent/mortgage 803.25
council tax 94.00
elec 139.00
gas
water 23.44
secured loans 328.67
TV licence 11.07
fines
sky 0.00
bb 29.99
student loan 0.00
bt 23.00
ch soc 0.00
life 20.00
mobile 50.00
petrol 120.00
bus fare 56.00
house ins 25.62
total 0.00 1724.04
397.86 divided by 4.33
397.86 total weekly spend
Start= income - spend = 122.07 per week0 -

forget about the student loan, this will need not be paid on a low income i called them my husband's income will still be too high, it doesn't matter to them that I am on maternity leave or not
Stop the charitable donation
Cancel the pet insurance or get rid of the pet thanks for the tip but I won't get rid of the pets, I made this commitment and it's not their fault that I am rubbish with money, i wouldn't get rid of my baby either

Also you have not mentioned car running costs; is it a company car? no it's my own car the spend in fuel will drop considerably once i am on mat leave because at the moment I have a commute of 1 1/2 hours

Thanks for all those tips, as I said above, I won't get rid of my cats. I made this commitment and I will see it through. I'd rather only eat dry pasta for the time I am on mat. leave!0 -
