Civil Service job offer

Hi all,

My son applied for an admin job at a local prison in Nov 2009. He was interviewed in Jan and placed on a short list.

In March he was contacted to see if he was still interested in the position. He confirmed he was. He has gone all the way through he vetting process and his current employer has been contacted for a reference.

Due to the new governent freezing recruitment, this has put a hold on the process. Although we have not been told officially.

He is getting hassle from his employer who rightly thimks he's leaving. The shared services dealing with his application will not inform him of any progress either.

What actually constitutes a job offer. As i said he was contacted in March to see if he still wanted the job. He said yes so they started the process, would this constute a formal job offer or what.

Regards

A formal job offer would be if he received a letter offering a job, stating a salary, asking for acceptance of the offer.

Even if he did receive an offer in due course, he would still need to give whatever notice is required under his current employment contract. The civil service would expect this. What sort of hassle is he getting from his present employer?

As his boss is the reason he is looking for another job, things have been difficult for him.

When she received the request for references, she told him to resign as he was going to be leaving soon anyway. Not knowing any better and thinking he was, he resigned. Sods law it was the same day the govt said they were putting recruitment on hold.

He was encouraged to eat humble pie and ask for his job back, as they had already hired soemone else he was given 16 hrs per week.

He does get overtime as and when, but as he works nights he has no set pattern, in one night off the next etc.

All told, he's greatful for a job, but peed off by the Prison Service recruitment as they won't acknowlege anything, no updates etc.

    Thanks for your reply.
