hi everyone, I posted before but must have done something wrong as it never appeared. I've been lurking for a year now using my i phone but didn't have an E mail address so couldn't post. My story is the usual one had credit cards for years, used loans to pay them off, used cards again. No problem as I've worked all my life full time and always had my head well above water. Then my health broke down last year and I had to retire from work, and no longer having an income to pay my bills I realised I needed help and went to the CAB who advised me to go bankrupt. I went to the local court and got bankruptcy forms, went back to the CAB and a lovely lady filled them in for me as I was a wreck and I took them straight back to court where another nice lady looked through them, asked me to swear on the bible and I paid the fee. She asked me to wait outside for ten minutes then called me back in to an office where I had to speak to a lady on the phone who asked me some questions.I was then given a court date to attend to see the judge. tTWhen I arrived at the court on the due date I met by the lady who took my forms and she told me I didn't need to see the judge as she had gone in and seen him before I arrived and just to go home and the OR would phone me in a couple of days, which he did and he spoke to me for about 15 minutes told me I could keep my car and then said to go and enjoy the rest of my life.that was on the 14 September last year and in January this year I got a letter from the OR saying I was being considered for early discharge and my creditors had been notified. On the 25th February I got a letter from the OR telling me I was now discharged from bankruptcy. I realise I've been incredibly lucky for things to have progressed so easy for me and some people have had terrible experiences with the bankruptcy process and believe me I've had sleepless nights and bouts of despair no doubt like everyone else has but I would like to tell everyone if it is a last resort for you please do it . I still feel ashamed that I've had to do this but hopefully this will wear off in time.

Hi toscat, it all seems very simple in hindsight doesnt it? Im glad its gone well for you, personally i havent had too many despondent days or sleepless nights since we went BR it was the best thing we ever did and im only a little hacked off that we didnt do it 3/4 years ago, but even if we had the process would have been exactly the same, we would still have lost the house but at least it would be finished with by now

I do remember how i felt at the beginning though and that wasnt easy, unnescesary but not easy, but none of the feelings compare to the months of wondering how we would pay the bills and buy food and clothes, or would the credit card get refused at the till? oh and the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when the credit card statements dropped onto the mat:eek: and knowing the wages were not going to cover it all. NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN

I LOVE NOT OWING ANYONE ANY MONEY:D:T:):j

Good luck with the future and i hope your health improves too :)

Hi Shazbo, thanks for your kind comments, my health is better than it was no doubt down to less stress.I do miss the holidays and being able to shop till I dropped but nothing compares to not worrying about the next bill coming in and being able to sleep at night which I now realise was probably the cause of my health breaking down.My bank who I had been with my whole life[The royal bank of Scotland] froze my account right away but thanks to the CAB i withdrew what I had in it and cancelled pensions etc. from going in and also direct debits. I phoned the co-op bank and explained my position and they said no problem and set up an account for me right away. I also opened an account with Barclays bank and I'm trying to put a few pounds in every month to cover anything like car repairs etc.and any other of these things that tend to crop up. All in all I'm in a much happier place than I was before the bankruptcy. Thanks again to everyone who has been posting on this site for all the invaluable information and help that I needed. Keep well Shazbo.
