Beware of being monthly paid!

Beware of the red tape some companies hand out these days.

Being paid early in the month is all well and good until

A: Its gone in a matter of days (youngsters who like their clubbing)

B:When you leave they demand overpayments back...

This has happened to me twice this year, my misfortune is that company A (Hbos) has took that long to get back to me about it I'm looking at a bill alongside company B (Marks n Spencers) who i've already arranged payments with...

All in all its not looking very good for me at the moment, having tried to get myself out of debt problems for the biggest part of 2 years I seem to have now got dug into yet another sand dune and its sucking me in fast..

B*****s!

Why can't they get it right !!!!!!!

Hbos have it in their heads i finished working for them on the 8th may when i started at Marks on the 7th!

They finally got round to sending me a p45 the week before i handed in my notice at Marks to return to the job i was doing before i started the job at Hbos.

I should have just stayed were i was in the first place, however another day another day deeper in debt :(

I've now got to arrange apayment plan with them my outgoings per month reach over £900 and I don't even know what i'm going to be getting at new job yet, that figure doesn't count the Marks payment, I'm just begging for extra hours every second i can and the whole reason for this job change this year was to try and spend more time with my family - sux :(

The trouble is, there's nothing much you can do about it. I used to be paid weekly, which was great, and meant that if I ever did become overdrawn because of a DD or SO, then there was money in to cover it within a few days, but the company decided it was easier for them to pay us monthly. They gave us one interim 2-weekly payment then onto the monthly payments. I struggle to manage at the best of times and it took me a few months to get everything square again.

  • On my previous job, I was paid weekly. It was great as I felt I had money alll the time. However I spent most of it. When I changed job, I was paid monthly. It felt awful at first as it seems to take ages to get my wages. However, I realized that I became more conscious on what I spend. It took a few months till I sorted my finances and psyche but it turned out quite a good learning experience. :T

Until recently I got paid weekly, you do feel like you've always got money, but it was very easy to overspend as you had no bills going out that week and then one week have loads going out & have hardly anything coming in to pay them!!

Ive just recently switched to monthly pay, although these last two months have been tough adjusting its nice to know i've paid off most bills on the 1st, transferred anything else I need to another account & whats left is mine for food, essentials and overpayments - if I run out then I need to go out and earn extra!!

    2 things

    1. you can sue your bank to get those charges back
    2. you can argue that if paying bqack thier overpayments will put you in financial difficulty, then you dont have to pay it.

Wizard knows about this. More info greatly recieved.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I've been paid monthly for many years by the job i returned to, the thing that niggles me most is they took over 2 months to notify me then demand payment.

This will put me in more financial difficulty and the best thing is the company had to know my credit history when they took me on!
  • I much prefer monthly pay, I wouldn't know what to do if I went back on weekly pay again! All my bills come out on the first and then that's it, don't need to worry because everything has been paid. If I was getting money weekly it'd be a pain to save £x each week to pay a monthly bill!

Hello Cee, yes you have to repay it if asked ie it's not free money....BUT, and it's a big BUT - most employers will send you a letter asking for the money back, but if you do not pay it, they will write it off if it is a fairly small sum. It simply isn't worth their time and costs to take you to court over it.

You could simply refuse to offer a repayment agreement, tell them you are suffering financial hardship and see what happens.

Surely thats why you work notice and also a month in hand so that when you leave you have a months grace on pay for it to be sorted, thats how it's worked for me when I've left my last 3 jobs

my new job at the time wanted me to start the following monday, i was that desperate to get out of the call centre i didn't work a months notice, but i did wait a month before i was paid originally, when i received monies from them i assumed it was them finishing off what i was owed and any bonus coming to me taken into consideration.

What they also did was pay monies into a pension I hadn't asked to join and money to the union i'd cancelled myself via email myself.

My direct manager couldn't be arsed to wish me well and muttered a few sentences to me - that was it! no leaving papers/interview. Ok i didn't work the notice and they were lucky i worked my day - i didn't have to but anyone who's worked for the hbos call centre and hated it will understand why i didn't bother.

Its the fact it took them that long to get back to me regarding this and the fact i had my p45 sent to me a week before i handed in my notice to marks n sparks that makes me laugh.

Marks sorted out the repayment i owe them and i don't dispute that and will pay them back, i even had my p45 too, which isn't bad considering i get monthly paid.

If they can do it why can't a bank get its act together??

I rang them about this yesterday and told them yes, i'll pay it but you have to get in line now, as i've already agreed payments to marks and am working all hours to pay that. I also told them because i've changed jobs, i've no idea what my income will be until end of sept.

She was nice the girl i spoke to and said she would ring me back - she didn't but i got an expendeture form in the post today - HOW QUICK OF THEM!!
