Watching Synth Britania, those dire images of 1979, rubbish strewn streets, high unemployment, strikes and electricity cuts, Britain on it's last legs as Japan et al stole our business away.
Lo and behold, despite all that by 1981 the yuppie was born and the boom well under way.
Funny how quickly things turn about, watch this space folks - 2011 will be booming:D.

Um, well, that is an interesting bit of historical revisionism. In 1981 the UK was in the midst of the worst recession since 1960. There were riots in the street. Unemployment only fell below 3 million 5 years later in 1986.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Perhaps the similarity will be a similarly austere budget with increases in income tax (personal allowances frozen in 1981 with inflation at 15% and lower rate of tax introduced by Labour abolished) and VAT (increased to 15% in 1979).
I'm guessing you weren't even born if you think 1981 was a boom year

Looking back one would have done well to buy a home in 1979 / 1981.0

I used to deal with the Greek community from the Winchmore Hill / Palmers Green area and a great many of them became rich through property in the 80's.
