The exchange rate which is commission free in the Bureau de Change in the Buttercrane Shopping Centre, Newry is 1.185 euros to the £1.
It is usually one of the best rates available.Judeybabe0 -
Avoid the banks if possible as they charge commission, the bureau's at the border towns as mentioned above tend to be the best and most competitve places.
The wee garage I get petrol from just over the border are very nice to me, I have been using them for years, at present they give 20% on the pound for purchases, but the nice lady manager gave me the rate for exchange last year as I was a loyal customer:)
If your not near the boarder towns try the post office or the likes of Thomas Cook as I think they have 0% commission:TI am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -

If you are looking for another solution, Caxtonfx - see (caxtonfxcard.com) have a pre-paid Euro mastercard (i suppose the modern travellers cheque) where the rates you can load onto it are very good. You can also re-load it when you are on holiday. There is a £10 charge upfront but you get that back when you load on £500+ There are no charges for using it abroad in either cash machines or in shops or restaurants, so the price you see if the price you pay which is pretty good. Hope this is helpful.0

Hi,
I always use Martin's currency checker which is in the travel tab on the MSE homepage (sorry, cannot post the link).
Locally I have usually found the Post office to have good rates. Most of the bank exchange rates are very poor, but I always at least check the Ulster Bank rate, as I have used them in the past.:)0
