Big savings on deodorant

I think you're right Meeten. I work in an office on a very busy road in London and also work quite near a photocopier, so there is probably a lot of black dust floating around me, like Pigpen in the Peanuts cartoons.
I suppose it's a good job all my shirts are 'seconds' at £4.50 each really!'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
Toner is a known carinogen. If there is toner in an office at that level it would be a H&S issue, seriously.
No detergent or prewash will shift toner, it is carbon black with a polymer.
What sort of material is the shirt cotton, poly cotton mix?
If the stains are old they will be harder to shift. Cotton is more prone to staining compared to synthetic fibre. How old are the shirts? What colour are they?
I work in London in the City so a clean shirt is quite important.
I assume you wash them after one day in the office, the same night or due you keep them and wash at the weekend.
Is is a machine wash or hand?
London water is hard, but if you are using biological prewash that is not effected, as that uses protein digesting enzymes from bacteria not soap. BIOTEX is a good pre wash.
Water in the SE of the UK travels thorugh chalk hence it is hard.
Moving north gets softer water, as it passed through granite. However this makes the water more radio active. My wife is from glasgow so I point this out
Yes there is air borne particulate dirt and dust in London but I assume wo shower and wash around your neck and wirsts.
I've assume the dirt is on the inside of your cuff, if its on the outside that just a dirty desk / workplace jacket!!
What temperature wash are you using.
I find after long days >10 hours at work, shirst may need a longer wash, the more cotton in the mix the hotter the wash needed.
It is not uncommon for dirt to build up, on shirts cuffs, collar, and under the arms over time. This is harder to shift due to the time.
It sounds like your regular shirt wash routine needs a review as dirt is accumulating.Seth.0 -
Austin_Allegro wrote:After a friend recommended this, I bought a crystal deodorant stick from Holland and Barret for £4.45. It's supposedly a natural deodorant that doesn't clog your pores or stain clothing, it's just a sort of rock that you wet and rub on.
I was initially sceptical and thought it might be some sort of new age rip off, but according to my friend it works very well and his is still going strong after a year - so that represents a big saving on my usual expenditure of £5 a month on Mitchum non-staining deodorant.
I've used it for the first time today and it seems to be working ok. Does anyone else have any experience of these?
The only downside is it is not an anti-perspirant, so I could end up with Tony Blair style armpits. That's not really a problem in winter when I wear a vest but in summer it might get a bit embarrassing.
I bought one of these from H&B after watching an experiment on GMTV ... the crystal came out best.
I don't consider I've got particularly sensitive skin, but found that after shaving, the "stinging" was unbearable, so I had to discontinue use.Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
Hi Ticklemouse,
I was most interested to read that you have been using toothpaste without fluoride for the past 5 years. I have been told that I am VERY allergic to sodium fluoride and have had great difficulty finding toothpaste without sodium fluoride. Could you please let me know the names and/or brands that you have been using? Many thanks.0 -
Birdie - want to pm you but there's no option on your name to do so. Can you do something to your settings so I can do - or pm me and I'll reply.
Thanks

Another crystal deodorant is the one I use. It's called 'Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal' and is in the form of a roll-on, so you don't need to wet it.
I bought it from Waitrose for £2.85. It says it is made in Florida.
I managed to buy a couple more of these from the b.ok site that was closing down and that I found via MSE (many thanks to the person who posted it).
I think they have sold out now, but they were selling them at £2 each, which was worth it if you were buying something else or if you don't live near a Waitrose, as I don't.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
i've been using it for years and it's great. good for sensitive skin too!0

I have been using these crystal deodorants for a couple of years now. When I first started using it I thought okay it is the winter so I am not going to be inclined to sweat much anyway. Come the summer I was working inside various packed tents, doing security, it really put it to the test. It was so hot in some of the tents that you could see a mist of sweat rising from the crowds, and it was dripping from the roofs, after work I was as fresh as a daisy, a bit damp I'll grant you but totally free of any bad smell, and that was the opinion of my not so fresh smelling colleagues as well."As if by magic... the shopkeeper appeared."0

Pretty handy to keep in your hand luggage on a flight0

The very cheapest and most effective deodourant (for me) is Bicarbonate of Soda.
Cost 50p ish for a 200g tub (found in the baking section of supermarkets).
I've been using this for almost 2 years now, I'm an active person and I have lovely armpits!
Apply to clean pits using dampened fingers dipped into tub (the powder won't stick to dry fingers), gently rub around armpit and stay fresh all day. No staining, no odour. Bicarb is a natural deodouriser and inhibits bacterial growth which is what causes the stink.
The only drawback I find is it's not too good for travelling, I have an aluminium free stick for such occasions.
Give it a go - you'll be amazed!!0
