Does she acknowledge the cash payments at all? If your OH had a digital recorder in his pocket and talked to her about it - "You know I was giving you £550 in cash, that's what you asked me to do, why are you doing this to me?" would she reply?0

I haven't a lot to add other than what's been said above, but you have my sympathy, as my OH was also stung by his ex after paying her in cash while the CSA took literally years to calculate his liability. She also denied she had received it (in the end she did admit £5 per week) and he found out the hard way that the CSA also don't recognise cheque payments. :mad:They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

This really annoys me - there is a paper trail of money going from one person to another person, one person has children with another person and should morally pay child maintenance. Why the heck would one person be paying random money to another person? Surely any reasonable person would say it was for child maintenance unless proved otherwise and the paper trail would show payments.
Cash payments are a whole different ball game but cheques should be acceptable and regular payments unless evidence is shown to the contrary (matches debt repayment for example) should be assumed to be child maintenance.
One thing OP, apart from sympathy, CSA payments are not written off by bankruptcy.
Good luck
