Do they work as bird scarers, and if so where can I buy them cheap?

As far as I can observe in my own garden, the birds wouldn't be scared of this. The reason is that they only seem to 'see' things that move. For example, if I am sat in my garden reading or doing something where I don't move very much, then birds land nearby. However if I then move, they fly off immediately. So for this reason I don't think plastic cats would work. An actual cat would be far better, though my parents' cat was fond of depositing mangled birds in the living room. And, although fun, cats aren't particularly moneysaving..0
