Steam Generator Iron?

Can anyone recommend a decent iron? My old iron packed in recently and the one I bought to replace it is awful. I have looked at steam generator irons and see a huge difference in prices - need some help please.

My girlfriend uses a Svelta 2 steam generator iron but she has worked in the fashion business for the last 20 years so is very fussy and has lots of experience ironing.

Any idea where she bought it? Can't find it on any websites!

I think they are about £300 but don't quote me on that, the good thing is that the buttons for the steam are ideally placed and you can use the iron without issues for a 2 or 3 hour stretch.

I would really like this but really don't have £300 at the moment to spend on an iron - can anyone recommend something less pricey? I was hoping to get a good recommendation and then shop around as I don't really know what I should be looking for.
  • Hi Sioban,

We recently bought a Tefal GV9360 from Electric Shopping for £196.98 including free delivery. We used Quidco to get 3% cashback as well. The iron itself is excellent and has 8 reviews on Amazon all with 5 stars.

Thanks - still quite a bit for an iron but I suppose you get what you pay for and it gets plenty of use in my house!

Gosh! I cannot believe how expensive the steam generated irons cost these days  I bought mine four years ago on a day trip to France, it cost 99 euro's and worth every penny, I hated ironing but now the 'chore' is so much easier.
Sioban, just had a quick look here http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-0164.aspx but do your homework befor you buy.
    Good luck

I recently bought a Philips GC7320 steam generator iron and love it! I'd never go back to an ordinary one again! Ironing is far quicker and more efficient but it's steamy work, especially in this weather!

A brief search found Amazon Marketplace selling it for £99.95

If you have a condenser tumble dryer try using the water from the condenser in the iron. My Maytag suggested this, saying to pour it through a coffee filter. I found that a pain and now use an ecloth polishing cloth inside a sieve! Sounds a faff, but the water doesn't seem to fur up the iron. You do need to filter it though as you get tiny bits of fluff in the water.

    Hope this helps.

I also have a Tefal Steam Generator. They are expensive but they are excellent (you only have to look at the reviews to confirm this). This is mine
