thanks guys

Evilm- I am interested too , did you actually get sacked for being ill then? I would agree with the others time off for an illness like that, however long would probably have been a one off , whereas a chronic condition you could anticipate coming back which may be trickier I guess...
SueC- makes sense.... this has been the longest I have ever been off due to illness in my life! but prior to that I did have several days off due to other things...I want to make a go of this, I dont particulalry want to move jobs at the moment, nor do I want to be out of work.....0 -

I did. Having two weeks for for swine flu (at least a damn bad flu virus anyway) I was sacked for not getting them the sick note for the second week by post by the Thursday when it was issued on a Monday. They hadn't asked me explicitly to send it in immediately and the contract only "reserved the right to ask for it".
Since the sick note was for a week I was used to handing it in the following monday. They sent me a discipline notice by recorded post which arrived on the Friday morning.
I have since got contract roles but it is difficult explaining it when people ask and I am sure I have been passed by for a role because of it.0
