I only have a budget of £800 including shoes, undies etc. Am I kidding myself?

No, I think that's perfectly doable. Lots of ranges come in around £500-£700 - Romantica of Devon, Pure Bridal, Sincerity Bridal, Jasmine, Alfred Angelo just to name a few. Don't forget to allow extra for alterations though - you will certainly need it to be hemmed to the correct length which can cost up to around £40.

And if you're not fussed too much about shoes, my advice is to hit the charity shops - I wandered around yesterday and found a couple of pairs in my size for about £3-£4 a pair, perfectly good condition. As it happens I'm borrowing my sister's Rainbow Club shoes which are normally about £75 (my "something borrowed"). :)

Also remember any extras like a tiara, veil etc, can almost always be found cheaper online than in a bridal shop. As an example, I found a veil I love in a shop for £85, but spotted the same one online for £40.

i havnt seen mine yet linda cos i cant afford to look never mind get my heart set yet lol
but this thread reminded me of seeing this
and i was just like this-->:eek:
its ok but its not 'omg im gonna marry the dress never mind my OH'
why the hell is it soo expensive linda??
its nearly my pt yearly salary
    do people buy this?
    what the freek??

Many of the top designer dresses are made of silk. The most luxurious is Duchess satin and at £30m trade cost for the bottom budget fabric, consider your gown has 10 m of fabric in the silk alone there's £300 to start.
I blogged about this but this is a small extract.

First off will be to decide where to purchase your gown and more often than not your first stop will be the bridal salon. You'll certainly be thinking how ridiculously expensive the gowns are but before you go into meltdown over the costs and thinking how mercenary the bridal industry is , consider this. The owner of the store has a wonderful selection of gowns to choose from. But, she's paying rent, wages and everything else you'd expect to pay if you owned a shop. She's attended the trade fairs and carefully selected an assortment of gown samples and accessories from well known designers and paid for them. She has to make the business work and you are enjoying the ambience of the said salon, and hopefully, her expertise.

You also pay for the priviledge of wearing the designer name. I can't charge what they do because who the hell am I? They've made their name in the industry so people will pay to wear their name.
People do buy these types of gowns, Bubbles, yes but they serve the clientelle who can afford a £5,000+ wedding gown.

I do think it's important to have the dress of your dreams. You deserve it. This is the best/most important dress you are ever likely to wear. How many times do you flick straight to the celebrity wedding pages in Hello and swoon over their gorgeous frocks?

An £800 budget is more than do-able if you know where to look.

Do you know what? I haven't got a clue what sort of dress I want. We're not getting married until October 2012 and I have promised myself that I'm going to look at dresses serioulsy until next summer because I am trying to loose some weight but is it normal that I really really don't have even the slightest clue what sort of dress I want? I'm panicking slightly now :(

OMG - I can't believe the dress in that link is nearly 5k!!!! I only have a budget of £800 including shoes, undies etc. Am I kidding myself?

I didnt buy "wedding shoes", i bought a pair from schuh in the sale for £40 and then another pair (whoops - cos i love the schuh pair but am gonna have to change through the day cos the will HURT!) from New Look which cost me £5 in the sale (they are wedges and i find them the most comfortable heels to wear!)

So my shoe(s) cost me £45 for two pairs and that is pretty much a THIRD of what a pair of bridal shoes would cost!

So course u can do it! My dress was £750 including the alterations and then add the shoes = £800 but i will admit i havent bought undies yet... but when i do, i wont be buying posh designer stuff anyway LOL :D
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

It usually costs about 2.5k but I got it at a hugely reduced sale price of £900 brand new with fittings included!
  • Thanks ladies, sorry to slightly hijack the thread, it just worried me slightly to see that all of you know about all of these stunning designer gowns and I haven't got a clue what I want just yet. Still, I'm sure when it's time for me to start looking I'll find something lovely. There are some stunning designs on this thread, the detail on some of them is amazing. x

at $5000, it is shockingly expensive for such a simple dress! I did consider having a copy made, but I just don't have the figure for it at the end of the day.
