Has anyone been contacted by recruiters on this? My mate been on this three weeks and got a job just like that by a recruiter ringing him. I been on it 6 months and nothing. He is looking for the same sort of job that I am. I am looking for admin work, what sort of skills should I list down that are needed for admin work?

I'm not sure all their jobs are genuine, to be honest.
I've stopped sending my CV because I normally don't get a response even when I meet all their criteria.
And I'm talking about fairly specialised roles that don't have lots of people applying for, and even well before the recession started.

But I'm glad your friend was lucky.

Well I contacted my consultant last week, as there was a job on there listed as new, yet I had been for an interview a few weeks back but not got it someone else had. I thought the person may have left or it fell through and may have gone back up for the taking, however I was told the job had gone, that their web site keeps the jobs on and periodically classes them as new in case things fall through. Jobs stay live until the person actually starts the job. This explains why people do not get reponses. I think this is a useless system, that wastes the true job hunters time.

Yeah, that's pretty useless - they are making their own life easier, but at the same time adding to the job seekers' frustrations.

When I was looking for a job, I had my CV listed on Reed I kept getting calls from agencies who wanted to put me forward for jobs in order to get their slice of the pie.

My GF and I have both found Reed a waste of time. Half the jobs don't exist I think as sometimes my GF in particular found that they'd phone about another job a couple of days after 'applying' for the job you like on Reed but they know nothing about it. I often wondered why it would say number of applicants '9745' and then exactly the same job underneath with another '8742' applicants.

But then again I really don't like recruitment agencies so maybe I'm biased.

I don't think they are putting up fake jobs that would be very risky for their own career and I would imagine a sackable offence!

I think as previously stated these roles are left up online on their web site until after the actual role is filled and the time gap between the role being filled and the site being updated is the problem we seem to face when applying..

I think most recruitment web sites really need to 'up' their game when it comes to updating vacancies on time and efficiently as possible, as they will lose customers damage their reputation and people will not bother to apply through them. Or have anything to do with them at all for that matter! Serial offenders I have found Page Personnel, Hays & Reed - I no longer apply for jobs through them becasue they are simply to lazy to update - I'm not wasting my time. Great way to lose customers thats for sure!

I found my current position through Reed but did get very frustrated when applying for jobs through this site and kept being told that the vacancy was filled. Not all the jobs on there are legit but at the end of the day I applied to those of interest in case it was a 'live' position. In a month I got 3 interviews with one resulting into a job for me. Yet, like yourself, I have heard of others who have got nowhere with Reed.

The jobs were not from Reed themselves, but other agencies using their websites. And I'm also talking about new jobs, just advertised.
Unfortunately it's not unusual for agencies to advertise non existant jobs. My field is fairly specialised, sometimes I can spot the fake ones. Once I even called the company whose genuine job advertised several months before had been cloned, and the vacancy had been filled.

Other times I call and the advisor is very vagues, jobs put on hold etc etc, and they don't sound convincing at all.
They do it to get CVs in, because when a vacancy comes in they have sometimes only a couple of days to find someone, and competition is fierce.

Sometimes they genuine jobs are not even advertised, if they have enough people in their books.

I registered with Reed and had calls, and genuine ones, from all the jobs I applied for. One of them I accepted on a temp to perm basis in Oct 2008 and still there now on a perm contract.

However, one thing I have noticed with their website is that they often "duplicate" the jobs. You'll often seen the same ones advertised again and again, the more pages you go into. Not sure if they are trying to seem like they have more jobs than they actually do have.

I've had zero positive response to any on-line agency search engine.
I am highly skilled and have applied for 300+ jobs from junior to senior and everything in between.
Agencies ring, pump you for the same old info and that's about the last you hear.
I have a sneaky suspicion they parse you CV and create jobs based on the skills you have. I have `very` specific skills and low and behold, after creating an account and uploading my CV I see jobs with exactly the same requirements. Most of the agency jobs are made up and speculative just to get you on their, and other agency books. Then they ring the closest matches to see if they can get positive hits.
I guess it's not their fault with no jobs to offer it's better than a blank search page.
Try narrowing the search to direct employer jobs and you'll see the `we have matched over 100 jobs` becomes `2 jobs found`.
Having said all this I would still use them. 1 in a million chance is better than nothing.
