Just did the Budget plan

I've just done the budget plan.. It looks a bit sparse.. However, I have a £1,200 overdraft to clear and I've not taken a holiday in 2 years..

With this plan I should save £2,254 over the course of a year - indeed, I've already tried this for 1 month and its working. Within 6 months I should have the overdraft back in credit..

However, if I can save more that would be lovely - does anyone have any advice?

Are you sure you have as much in as you need for things like entertainment etc? never eat or drink out? no clothes or entertainment etc? (not critisising if you don't just don't want you to forget it from your budget if you do spend)

Is your overdraft apr higher than your credit cards? how much interest do you pay on the OD each month (I don't think you have included it?).
If the cards are higher apr might be worth targeting them first. What is your credit rating like? any chance you could BT any of your debts for better deals?

Thank you for the advice - I have taken your suggestions on board and devised a new plan.

1. Cleaning is high because I have a cleaner.. I'm rarely home, and my weekends are usually crammed with training. Plus, she's a legacy from when I didn't have debt.. her ex-husband is a monster who left her with 3 kids to raise, and I don't quite have it in me to let her go as £20 a fortnight makes a huge difference to her.. Maybe I'm being too soft..

2. Electricity includes gas - I'm dual fuel.

3. Water. This is a bone of contention.. I'm on a meter, in a new built which was badly built. I had ample internal links which took months to investigate.. my builder fixed the leak, but refused to refund my water bill. I spoke with the Water Company, and they very kindly and generously refunded the excess (it wasn't their liability). However, they accidentally over-refunded me. I didn't realised this at the time.. thought I had a windfall, and used it to clear my tax bill.. so the direct debits are high because I'm paying back the over-refund.

4. Car tax - I drive a Polo 1.4 Tdi.. it falls into the cheapest tax bracket. I used to drive a GTi which was insanely expensive (but much more fun to drive)

5. Car insurance is a little high.. I had two bumps last year, one my fault the other not. However, I had to make a claim because the other driver was uninsured.. my car insurance sky-rocketted as a result.

6. Rail. The girlfriend lives in far away.. I estimated £30 a week.. its sometimes cheaper, sometimes more. It may work out cheaper to drive to see her..although it will take considerably longer. If I cut this to £10 and only see her if I can get a cheap rail ticket..

7. Parking. You're quite correct, why am I paying to leave my car somehwere? What are side streets for.

8. Entertainment. In the origional I blurred entertainment with household and food shopping. I've now seperated them to make the destinction - and reduced slightly. I'm fortunate enough to rarely hit the booze (Christmas and birthdays) as it messes with my training.

9. The House insurance is building and contents - at the time it was the cheapest I could find; however it's up for renewal next month - so I'll be aggressive in my haggling!

10. My Mortgage - rate is 5.99%, balance is £102,500ish - I paid £149,950 for it.. I'm not sure what its worth now in. I'm on a 3 year fixed step mortgage.. think it was 4.95 in the first year.. then 5.69, and now 5.99. It finishes next March - although I may exit early for a fee of £2,500

11. Diesel for the car - I've halved this. It dawned on me, I cycle about 100 - 150miles a week.. why don't I just get up early and work my daily commute into that schedule?

12. Credit card repayments - £3,120 on a stable relationship card at 5.9%. I've not done the sums to see how long it will take to pay off - however, my minimum payments are around £80 a month - I'm paying more than the minimum (£125)

13. Loan - 5k, and it's interest free.. the loan company had entered me into their customer lottery, and I won. It was taken out to fix problems with this house which the builder didn't want to know about, as well as a spot of redecoration etc. I should have it payed off this time next year.

14. Mum & Rach. My Mum and sister gave me £125 each when they heard everything was going wrong.. they didn't expect it back; however I wanted to pay them back - so I set up a standing order to pay them £25 a month until the debt is cleared. It's will be cleared in two months time.

15. New Clothes - probably not realistic.. but I'm still wearing Rugby shirts from when I was 16.. For the moment, new clothes just aren't a priority.

16. Birthdays & Christmas - you're right I should have added something in for this. I was kinda hoping I could get away with not doing these.. alas its impossible.

17. Mobile phone - I pay £45 a month, for 1200 mins, unlimited text, 500mb mobile internet and unlimited home broadband. This is ridiculos.. I'm out of contract next month, so plan to go to Tesco's Monthly plan. £15 a month, 500 mins, unlimited text, unlimited mobile internet. I need home broadband beacause I'm a software developer and sometimes work from home.. so I will go with plusnet, as they're cheapest.

18. In addition.. I forgot I wear glasses. Work will pay for my eyetests, and suppliment my specs - if I add £100 I can get a nice pair, or use the suppliment to replace my lenses (I usually rag my glasses though.. so often need a new pair every 12 months).

19. I forgot to add in a basic amount to cover new tyres and inner tubes for the bike. I wont be upgrading the bike in any way this year.. I have plenty of spare chains in the garage.. worst case scenario is I brake the bottom bracket or something.. It shouldn't wear out for a long, long time.. so if I budget for tyres and inner tubes that should suffice.

And I think that's about it.. I'm able to save 20% of my income!! I quite liked using the budget planner - it was like a game.. take a bit off here, take a bit off there.. etc.. hit the red button to see if you've made it!

Plus, what I save at the end of each month will go straight to paying off debt.. When the debt's cleared off (the only debt I'm concerned with is the credit card - the loan is a regular payment and interest free) I'll be left with a further £125 a month! When the loans payed off I'll be left with a further £263 a month! Plus I'm due a pay rise this year (cross fingers this will still happen) which may give me an extra £100 a month.

If I'm able to save 20% of my current income (£439) + £263 when the debt's cleared = £702 a month. That puts a huge smile on my face.. I best get that debt cleared!

You seem to be getting on top of things and have figured out new ways to save some more money towards your credit card. One extra thing that's useful too is having a spending diary so that you can track where your money goes to each day / week. Judging by your posts you are pretty disciplined when it comes to training, etc, so a spending diary might fit in well with your lifestyle! I find that it's almost a bit of a deterrent to spending, as I know I will have to write it down! You maybe don't need that, but it's still useful for you to know what your money goes on and perhaps where you could shave off more.

I've just phoned up E-ON, and gave them meter readings. My direct debits have gone from £102 to £70! I'll add that into the mix.. I already keep a diesel diary, so it makes sense to keep a spending diary too
