Speak to own bank as well?

Hi all,
My partner and I are now at the stage of looking for flats and have spoken to a broker at L&C (who has advised us to find a property that we want to offer on and then call him back). I've read the guide to a first mortgage on the main site. Once we find a property I will check HSBC etc to see if we can get a better deal than through the broker. Is it also worth speaking to our own bank (Co-op) when we get to that point?
Thanks,
Pippa
