I took the girlfriend to see about getting a price on a brace today and was quoted £1700.

Not what you asked, but you might want to consider getting a second examination and quote for something this big, based on an experience I had a few years ago.

I was investigating orthodontic treatment. My dentist had an orthodontics specialist within the practice who gave free examinations and quotations. He said that a few teeth out and a couple of years of braces would sort it all out for something like two or three thousand pound.

I looked at the sort of things should be conducted during an orthodontics examination, and he hadn't done half of them. I decided to get a second opinion, and found an independent specialist. Five months and just £500 later everything was fixed. Even worse, if I had followed the advice of the first specialist, apparently things could have been made worse.

I had a few problems trying to find the second specialist - I ended up calling a few dental surgeries in the area and asking who they referred their patients to, which worked well.
