Taking temp work in hols while on term time contract?

Just a thought - I'm currently on a term time only contract so have 6 weeks of summer off. a) are you allowed to take on extra work in summer, and b) how horrendous would the tax be? This is of course based on me knowing there's probably !!!!!! all temp work around at the moment, but I'm trying to tackle debt!!

    a) usually yes, provided it doesn't conflict with your main employment (b) you would probably be taxed at basic rate on PAYE.

Unless there is something in your written contract that says you can't work in the time you are not working for them, then there is no reason for you not to do so. If there is, then it probably says you have to ask their permission - where some employers don't want an employee doing other work on days when the work for them. Working in long holidays should not worry an employer.

You would be paying 20% tax on your earnings (unless you are a higher rate tax payer in which case it would be 40%) because you will already have had your personal allowance allocated to your first job. You would also pay NI - but you would gain the benefit of the weekly allowance before paying NI on these temp earnings.

Lots of people on term time contracts work in the summer holidays, including teachers, teaching assistants amnd some office staff. If it doesn't conflict with your usual employment, and there is nothing in your contract to say you can't, you should be fine.
