Should I take the job offer?

Im employed as a Account Manager for a company based in Germany. I am paid £27k pa. Its a small company, no UK office but I like the job but annoyed since I am underpaid for what I have to do and I hate they annual bonus plan.

I have recently been offered a job with a rival company; same role but a smaller territory to manage and they are offering £7k more so that my base will be £34k. Their bonuses are paid quarterly and they have a UK office. They are slightly bigger then my present employer. However, I do not like the type of products that they sell (very boring) and I just have this bad vibe that I will regret accepting the offer - this could be fear of the unknown.

In case your wondering, I work in the Biotech industry.

Im not sure what to do. The extra money will be nice but I dont think moving to the new job will be a step up in my career more a sideway step. I want to only move only if its a step up but then the money is very tempting. However, I dont want to move and then regret it a year down the road and start looking for better jobs since this will make my CV look bad.

I know some will suggest that I approach my current employers and use this job offer to convince them to pay me more. However, Im too scared to take the risk incase they say "no and good bye"!! lol

What would you guys do? Should I stick out with my current smaller employer, build up my experience and then move to a job that is a step up in my career or shall I move to this new slightly bigger company (who may have career progression) for more money? The recruitment consultant who got me the interview is telling me that sometimes you need to move sideways to go upwards! Although, he is probably worried he will lose his commision.

What would you do?

    Do you have prospects in your current job? Will you have prospects if you moved? Can you put up with boring products? Do you need the extra money? Can you tactfully ask for a rise from your current company?
    The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

    It's difficult to make the right decision based on a 'vibe'.
    Personally I've take a particular job that sounded like my dream job, great money, great role, company with a solid reputation, good vibe... and it ended up being such a nightmare that I left after a few months....

    So maybe this job will be great, you don't know before you try, I'm afraid...

    Do you know anyone who works there who can give you the low down?

    In regards to prospects I can summarise it this way:

    Current employer:
    * No UK office, based in Germany
    * Two reps in UK
    * UK turnover £1.5 million - sell specialist products
    * Recently merged with a bigger company and will start selling their products - will result in a significant boost in revenue

    Pros:
    (1) No immediate opportunities for progression but If the company gets big due to recent merger, I could be in prime position for a senior position in the UK since I would be the most experienced. However, this is not a gurantee but its more then likely they will go for someone inhouse who knows the company then someone outside.
    (2) Enjoy the job and find the products we sell interesting
    (3)The job i do is not just selling, but also buisness development, tech support, customer service and B2B sales - so I have a lot of responsibility compared to other reps in other companies whose job is to just sell sell sell!!! :)Therefore in theory, I am more experienced and have a lot more responsibility then many reps in my position and therefore tempted to hold out for a better more senior position somewhere else however there is no guarantee that I will get it - rival companies more then likely groom people in house for senior roles.

    Cons:
    (1) Underpaid - £27k, less then other competitor companies and I do more work.
    (2) Rubbish annual bonus.

    Potential New Employer:
    * UK Offices
    * 7 reps in the UK
    * £10 million UK revenue
    * Opportunities for progression but only if someone leaves

    Pros:
    * Slightly bigger company
    * Opportunities but only if someone leaves
    * £35k salary and good quarterly bonus

    Cons:
    * I will be just another sales rep - unlike my current and varied job role by job will be just to sell
    * Not a fan of the products
    * Manager came across as a bit of a nob! Even the guys who interviewed me in my 1st interview (before I met the manager) said that the manager was difficult. My current manager is a nice guy but our company earns less in revenue, the manager of this company is a nob but they earn more - interesting eh? :)

    Let me know your thoughts.

    On the facts as presented, in your position I would take the new job.

    Two main reasons:

    £35k is a significant rise on £27k - the main reason why we work is to earn money!

    I would be concerned about continuing to work for a Company with a turnover of only £1.5m - this barely qualifies as a corner shop.

    Would it really matter if they did? After all, you have the other, better paid job to go to.

    Sorry my bad I explained badly.

    1.5mil is the revenue in my territory. The company earns around 900 million world wide.

    In regards to the rival company, the revenue in the territory I could manage is 10 million and they earn over a billion world wide.
