I want my floor to sparkle :(

Wonder if anyone knows a good way to get black floor tiles shiny?

They're huge tiles (they were on a B&Q ad a while back if anyone saw them?) in my kitchen, and when I mop/wipe them over they'll shine when wet, but go dull straight away. And then don't look freshly cleaned to me anymore

Wiping with a microfibre cloth would probably help. You can get those flat kind of mops which you might be able to attach a cloth to the bottom of to save doing it on your hands and knees.

A number of kitchen tiles are actually meant to be matt finishes, in order to be less slippery. In which case, there is not much you can do, although wiping it over with a cloth covered in fabric softner might help if it is a ceramic tile (like all instructions, try it first in a hidden spot, on a small area, and wait and see if it helps).

If its a build up on an otherwise shiny floor, try a strong vinegar and water solution to strip it off and the wash with a lighter vinegar water solution after wards.

There is nothing I know of that will make an intentionally matt floor shiny that won't also make it more slippery...

You can buy a floor polish by Johnsons from the supermarlet, it is in a 500ml (ish) bottle and is clear, should be somewhere near the other floor cleaning stuff, you put it on with a dry cloth or mop and build it up over time it will give you the wet look shine you are after.

Works great on ceramic floor and also laminate floor :)

I think johnson and johnson have stopped selling it, It was called Klear i tried tescos and our wilko`s last month and they said they had not had any in for a long time and that they thought they had stopped making it. I hope they are wrong and will keep a eye on this thread in case someone knows different.

Don't know if this will help...
we have a fireplace which has a quarry stone tiled hearth - when it was put in the tiles were porous and dull looking, The fireplace guy told us to clean them and then wipe them over with a thin coatiing of boiled linseed oil to seal them to stop them from getting stained by wood ash and to make them shine. You have to do it and then leave for a couple of days until it hardens off but the coating stays really shiney for a long time and you can buff the shine up with a soft dry cloth if you wantthem super shiney.....just wondered if you could try this with a sample section of yours? :)

Thats right Klear we have just run out, my DW buys it from the local independant hardware shop, may also be in the DIY places never looked TBH.

    EDIT

Just done a bit of googling and it does seem to have changed to this now by pledge:

  • Hi,

My boyf was looking for Klear a while back, and it turned out it has a different name now. I'm not allowed to post links, but if you google "pledge klear", it's the first on the list, from the SC Johnson website.

No idea what it's like on floors though :o

Some great ideas, thanks everyone! The floor was originally very shiny, but being in the kitchen the tiles are always being walked on as me and hubby, and our two dogs (there's me wondering why my floor won't shine for long!!) come in from the back garden.
