It might be worth paying the hairdressers a visit if your ends are split and/or weak, just to remove the worst of it at the ends.

I'd also recommend a monthly head soak in olive oil, which can be mixed with some almond oil - apply and leave in for half an hour before washing.

A weekly intensive conditioning treatment would also help get your hair shiny and healthy.

Do the above in addition to your normal daily washing/conditioning, and you should see an improvement.

Any of the high street branded products for colour treated hair would normally improve hair condition, but I like the Wella Professional products, which you may need to buy from a hairdressers.

You'll probably receive lots of other people's opinions too - everyones hair is different, so it's a case of try it and see

You need a treatment masque- conditioners wont be enough.

Some products which show noticable differences in hair (but are expensive) are
    Phillip Kingsley Elasticizer,
    Kerastase Masquintense
Aphogee (supposed to be for Afro hair but anyone can use it)
Protein treatments such as those from Redken should also help.

I have tried loads of hair masques from a high street point of view- everything from Aussie through to stores own brands, I found the Kingsley masqu the best one for my hair.

But its worth bearing in mind that hair is dead. Once its left your scalp its dead. What you can do is treat it and sort of plump it up, add protein to it and it should appear to be fine. But you must repeat this weekly (in some bad cases more frequently) as basicly as with any hair care (cheap or expensive) hair is dead, this will wash out in time.

With any masque, I think the longer you can leave it on the better in my experience. There are others who disagree and say it can damage hair but I have never had this happen to me.
Wash hair with shampoo first, rinse and apply the masque to damp hair, leave in for 20 mins plus, rinse out and then apply conditioner and rinse as normal.

To prevent further damage I am sure you know the score: no heated appliances- hair dryers included, no straightening, curling tongs and watch the sunlight- very hot days can burn hair just as it does with skin.
If you can, get a leave in conditioner, some are better then others and it really depends what your after, I'd advise what I use but they no longer make it and its near impossible to find more on ebay, but your looking for something which does not have too many silicones as silicons can dry hair out over a short space of time. Silicons are any ingredient ending with the word 'cone' (dimethicone for example).

You could also try reducing your shampoo use, some people find shampoos too drying and often its due to the amount of sulfates in them. Sulfates are there to clean and give you a lather when you wash but just like normal bar soap, can be very drying. Maybe try washing just with conditioner every other day? some people swear by the CO (conditioner only) method and never use shampoo, others use a clarifying shampoo once a week (a clarifying shampoo deep cleanses).

Using oils as a maque is another idea, but it has mixed results, some people get on well with things like coconut oil or olive oil, others find it hard to rinse out or get a heavy clumpy result.

    ah thank you sooo much!
that thing about the sulfates make sense as my latest shampoo is the aussie 'miracle' which lathers up like mad!
so ill have to get a new shampoo too i might try the CO thing for a bit first though
i have been going to the hairdressers more regularly but id need a few inches off which would make it shoulder length, luckily its damage underneath so its not really noticable(it looks quite healthy on top!)and its probably from having to wear my hair up at work in a ponytail aswell
thanks again youve been a great help xx

    Ojon
These products saved my hair ! I know sounds a bit dramatic but I had used every hair range available on the high st my hair was over processed (highlights / lowlights blow drying & GHDs)- dry brittle and breaking off at the ends within a week of using ojon there was a vast improvement and after a month my hair felt healthy I have now been using this for over a year and would not be without it now .

I bought it from Qvc they also sell the Philip Kingsley it a good way of trying with the option of sending it back (30 day money back ) if the product doesn't live up to expectations.

Sorry, but I have read this thread and I have to ask as I am intrigued with what hair dyes you have been using? you say that you have only been dyeing your hair in the last couple of years? how often? what condition was your hair before you started dyeing it?

I have been dying my hair since i was 12!. Every colour you can think both dye and bleached. I now have waist lenght hair - now with no dye. It has took me years to get it healthy again. First you need very regular trims - my hair dresser also my best friend, reccommended every 4-6 weeks, harsh but it gets rid of all the split ends, i had split ends what went up almost the entire lenght of hair.
It may not be sutiable for you, but herbal essences dry ends shampoo and conditioner worked for me.
Also as another poster recommended a monthy olive oil soak. Also forget expensive intence conditioner, use regular conditioner once a week leave it on for 30 mn - a hour wrapped in cling film, after a hot rinse, turn the shower on cold to give it shine.

Do the stretch test first to find out if you need moisturising or protein shampoos - you'd be amazed at the difference the right type of conditioner makes!

    1. pull out a few strands of hair from different parts of your head - and wet them (I just do it in the shower).
    2. stretch each hair individually between your fingers (try to stretch it to about 50% when wet).
    3. if it breaks, you need moisture based conditoners; if it doesn't break, but doesn't return to it's original length you need protein based conditioners; if it's stretches and returns to its original lenght, congratulations! You have healthy hair :)

I've been colouring (mostly lightening) my hair for about 12 years (some salon, mostly home) and I find protein conditioners best for me - bizarrely all moisture based conditioners make my hair duller and drier!

I can't recommend a really good moisture conditoner becasue of that, but i really rate Tigi BedHead Dumb Blonde reconstructor for a protein conditioner. You can get the 750ml bottles online for about £12/13 - it sounds a lot, but the bottles last aaaaaages, and it's by far the best conditoner I have ever tried on my hair, and that's saying a lot! This is my holy grail product, and I'm never changing now...

Second best IMO is a botanics mask you can get from boots, if you want something easier to get hold of and cheaper (£4.99, but won't last as long): http://www.boots.com/en/Botanics-3-Minute-Deep-Conditioning-Hair-Mask-450ml_35511/

my hairdressers tells me to read the labels - avoid anything with silicone in, as it masks the problems.

lexuslass dont apologise! ive used mainly loreal recital or belissimo something else aswell but cant remember, i started off with honey blonde as that was my natural colour if it was dyed by the sun but cos we hadnt had enough sun for long enough it started to go darker thats why i started dying it
i then got bored so went for lighter and lighter shades
i hardly used conditioner because i hadnt before, my hair was in good condition, down my back
i do try to go for regular trims now
ill let you know how i get on x
