Car Insurance Help Needed - 'Pool' Car

Hi Folks,
I need some help with getting some car insurance ?
Luckily, because of some other circumstances, both my wife and father-in-law have managed to purchase (new to them) cars.
This leave us with my father-in-law's trusty old family car still available and perfectly useable. Given that there are four of us who all use cars (my wife and I for 'business purposes'), the need for a 'spare' car in the family is a useful one.
The problem is trying to get a half decent insurance quote for it.
Most of the 'big' insurers are asking 'silly money' to cover such a vehicle. My father-in-law is retired and like myself, we both have bags of 'no claims' discount, however I have been told that this NCD cannot be used on a 'second' vehicle.
None of the four drivers have any claims on them for a significant amount of time (5 years +) and would be classed as 'mature'.
The insurance companies we have all spoken to want to treat the vehicle as if it was been driven by someone with no NCD whatsoever and stump up the premium accordingly, which is very unfair and I don't think refelects the 'risk' posed to the insurer. This equates to us forgetting all our collective driving experience, the minute we sit behind the wheel of the family car ....
I also suspect that since the car will only be used on occasions when our respective regular vehicles won't be around, the 'pool' car won't run up a massive amount of mileage during the year either, so 'set mileage' policy might be applicable.
Does anyone else have experience of this situation ?
Can anyone recommend an insurance company / broker out there that would be able to deal with this sort of policy, without 'ripping us off' ?

I bought an additional car as a runabout a few months ago and got a good quote through Lancaster Insurance http://www.lancasterinsurance.co.uk/ involving an introductory discount on a limited mileage policy with Groupama. Although Lancaster are best known for classic car policies they can offer quotes on other vehicles.0

You may want a multiple car policy from Admiral - i think its them.
Or talk to your existing insurance company and they may offer to match or at least provide some additional discounts.

The problem with the existing insurance company was that my father-in-law's car was insured through SAGA (I think) and they weren't interested in doing a quote for a couple of drivers that weren't of SAGA's qualifying age, especially when the policy was required for business use.
There are companies that will give us quotes, but they are in excess of £500 per year, when our individual policies are half that for our regular cars.
Naturally, as you might expect on MSE, I'm trying to get the best deal possible *WINK*0 -
If the cars a "shed" & your happy to drive it 3rd party one of you (the cheapest risk) could get a multicar policy & the rest drive it under the driving other cars part of their existing policy.0

Be very careful with this approach as there may be restrictions and caveats that aren't particularly obvious and could lead to a Driving without insurance charge. Plus some insurers don't offer the cover.0
