Direct Debit v's Pre-payment

Hi - Scottish Power are offering us a move from Direct Debit to Prepayment Meters (we have some arrears on the account and are struggling to keep up with the payments) Has anyone else made the switch? Is it worth it and do you save any money? They are pushing us to move to this and saying it will be much better for us and wanted some advice if possible.
Thanks!

    By moving:
    1) You will loose the DD discount
    2) PPM tariff will be about the same as credit tariff, pay on bill prices.
    3) What you pay will vary based on useage unlike DD where you pay the same each month.
    4) You cant use what you have not paid for.
    5) If they are pushing, they it may be better to accept rather than them forcing you.
    6) Debt repayment rate will probably be lower with ppm than what they would want on credit.

    Hi Mrskb0

If you are struggling to repay an outstanding balance then a prepayment meter will allow to clear the balance over a much longer period of time helping to reduce your monthly outgoings. It also helps to keep on top of the gas/elec you are using.

ScottishPower have an "In Home" pay as you go device called a PowerPod. See link below for more details:

    http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/support-centre/payments/prepayment/in-home-pay-as-you-go.aspx

This way you do not have the added hassle of having to run out to the shops if your meter needs topped up.

If you would like any further information just let me know.

    Kind Regards

They have got for electric like BG like Colin's put a link to above.
Obviously these things are no use if you've run out of electric and your emergency credit has run out - you still need to run to the shop then :D

As long as you keep the meters topped up they are fine. Mine ran out over the weekend while I was away once (lots of food had to go in the bin :() and to get to mine to top up requires a ladder and hanging onto the boiler :o which is a PITA.
  • Just a note for Naked, your supplier is bound to move your PP meter is using it is dangerous..........speak to them

PPM are good but put in what you intend to spend and build up a balance, that way you will never run out and you will be ok when winter arrives. So put £xxx on your meter every week

Colin maybe you can shed a bit more light on the cost of those powerpods?

That link says there "may" be a charge and for more info gives a link to the Ts&Cs which talk an awful lot about charges etc. but doesnt mention prices anywhere...
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
