Is Greek island of Kos expensive ?

We have booked our hols to the Greek island of Kos at the end of July and have just heard how expensive it is out and about i.e. £8 a pint and £1-60/ litre of petrol ( got a hire car planned ) ...Has any 1 just returned from a trip there and help with any information please ??
