I am having a long overdue clean out of my larder and may not have to go shopping for several months:o Whilst cleaning out the pulses I found a packet of "Urid - whole" still in date which I bought in an ethnic grocers thinking it was puy lentils:rolleyes: - it was dark, I was in a hurry, and yes I do need to wear glasses more often.
I have never heard of this before and I'm not quite sure what to use it for. I am all for trying new recipes and I am hoping someone can enlighten me.
BTW the out of date chick peas are being made into juggling balls and the out of date butter beans are for bean bags. If I don't find out what Urid is they might also be turned into juggling balls.:o

OOD chick peas??? I've been using chick peas for years and years - the same packet! Never gave it a thought that dried peas could go "out of date".

Out of date dried pulses and beans? It never bothers me or my mum!
As long as they have been stored in dry conditions they are fine! Just soak and cook as normal!
Only if they have got damp would I chuck them! As then can get mould growing!
As for the urid/urad - google and get loads of recipes!
Is used for veggie curries, flour is used for poppadoms, mixed with rice and ground into wet batter is used for dosas and idlis. Add to rice and cook for different flavour
Have fun looking and trying

Out of date pulses can be very tough and fail to soften up on cooking.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

That is correct. But it's worth trying to sprout them, and use the sprouts in a healthy salad....;)Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Thanks for all your help - I didn't want to cook the out of date pulses in case they took ages to cook
- it has happened to me in the past and as I have lots of them - Sainsbury's were having a clear out-
I would rather not risk it. I have tried but I just can't get used to eating bean sprouts.

If you soak your out of date pulses overnight they don't seem to me to take any longer than normal. Mind you I always use a pressure cooker for pulses so never have to wait long anyway. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program
