Wish I'd have known about the milk thing would have tried it.
I have my tatties and toms as far away as poss from each other at the moment. I took my toms to my sons garden, just in case;)0 -

I know about the Famine, my mum was Irish
I just dont know what exactly it was that was wrong with the potatoes - if it was blight ? And no, the UK did not help them 
I havent been outside to check mine yet. I sort of don't want to know !
yes the potato famine was caused by blight (Phytophthera infestans). It was worse because all the potatoes grown at that time were the same variety (virtually genetically identical).0
