My alterations were £75 which was for taking the bodice in by 2 inches, and shortening it. And mine's a big and very layered dress. :)

Thanks for this shellsuit, I was wondering the same!

I tried my dress on last week and I don't think it needs taken up but the lady in the shop said I would need it.... If anything it would only need 1/2" to 1" do you think it's worth it? It has a train and that would get dirty throughout the day anyway... what do you think?

    Thanks!

It's all about the ability (or not) to walk in it and 1/2" is worth it when it means walking or tripping!

eta. You never take up a train unless it's excessivly long and the bride wants it shorter.

Thanks for that Linda, I will have a good look and try it on again with my shoes.

  • I was starting to worry about this myself! My dress is a perfect fit but the seamstress is going to customise my dress (it has rosebuds on and and i wanted some bling/beading sewing into the rosebuds). Have no idea how much that is going to cost yet!

Something like this is hard to cost as you wouldn't know how long the job will take. Ask her to give you a max fee she may charge so at least you can have some idea. If she works on an hourly rate then she could give you an approx timescale. It all depends on the seamstress.
  • Thanks Linda, think that's something to get sorted today! :)
  • Just to add that I asked the shop I'm buying my dress from how much they charge for taking up the hem. The dress has a two inch colour trim on the bottom, and would need taking up an inch hopefully without cutting the trim in half. They said £45.

It all depends on where you go. I've been in two other shops that sell alterations packages. One charged £60, the other £165. Even if it was just a case of taking the hem up a little.

They should remove the trim in a strip and then reattatch it after they've taken away the excess from the gown. So, the shorteneing will be done on the gown not the trim (if you get that lol)
