problems with teeth (molars)

Over the last year or so I have been having a hellish time with my teeth.

It started when my wisdom teeth came through - that was painful, as is to be expected, but it seemed to coincide with other issues with my existing molars - namely that they're just crumbling!

Have been told I need at least 2 root canals (one is half done already), but as it stands today, my last but one upper molar on my right side is loose, and causing pain, and on the other side, the equivalent tooth has a massive vertical crack down both sides, whilst the one behind it (further back) is a wisdoom tooth that came through with a hole, and has collapsed.

My mother told me that she had malaria when she was pregnant with me, and I had it quite a few times as a baby (joys of living in Africa as a kid), and that this caused problems with my baby teeth, but one dentist picked up on the fact that I have white spots on my adult teeth, which is apparently a sign of fever/illness in childhood?

Could this be contributing to the state of my teeth now? Before these problems arose, I've had the odd filling, but nothing major...now it seems everything is going wrong at once.

To top it off, the dentist I am with is absolutely useless, but the waiting list in my area is 3 years, and took me years to find this dentist! He does the minimum work required, has a dismissive attitude and to be frank, I don't entirely trust him to do a good job, but at this point I have no alternative.

Anyhow, apologies for the rant, but if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do to try and sort out these issues...have been suing seonsodyne gentle whitening, then switched to the new cordasyl toothpaste (which tastes vile, btw).

My jaw also cracks rather badly, but I suspect this is due to an accident a few years ago (fell and hit jaw at an odd angle)...was admitted with a suspected broken jaw and shoulder...both were apparently fine, but since then my jaw has cracked - is usually fine, but occasionally, say if I yawn awkwardly it will "lock" and takes a bit of manouvering to allow me to close my mouth again...however, this is probably unrelated to the dental issue...

Okay, this message is a little longer than I was intending, but hopefully you guys get the idea!

For a waiting list of 3 years, I assume you mean NHS.

Have you investigated private alternatives? It's not always as expensive as the newspapers suggest, and often there are a range of price points within the same town.

Your first priority would be to find a dentist you trust.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I have just graduated, so money is tight...having said that, being in Scotland I have to pay for everything anyhow (it's a different system to England)...have already paid over £200 and feels like very little has been done...I just get the impression that they try to drag it out into as many appointments as possible because that way they can make more money (I have to pay per appointment, and it's usually been about £60 per time on average).

I also called yesterday for an emergency appointment and was told there were none until the end of June?! After much begging and pleading (and sighing on their part) I got an appointment for this evening.

I used a private dentist a few years back, just the once, for an extraction, and that was over £100 (including initial exam), and while he was an amazing dentist, knew what he was talking about, obviously cared about patients, etc, I simply do not have that kind of money.

At the moment I am stuck between Aberdeen (3 year NHS waiting list) and Surrey (horrendously expensive private).

These people are registering new NHS patients just now: Cove Dental Care 4 Catto Walk, Cove Bay, Aberdeen AB12 3PT 01224 872 675.

You need to go to the surgery to complete a registration form

The Number 3 bus drops you off about 200 metres from the dentist.

Thank you - this is the dentist I am using at the moment. It's just very expensive with the Scottish system and am a bit wary as was told they had no emergency appointments for 3 weeks by one member of staff...still, can't complain too much as they have been helpful overall so far!
