in Cutting tax
The moral of this story is not to be a smart !!!!.
In the 2001 tax year I was on a crazy emergency tax code and too silly to know anything about these things. I earnt less than £6k that year. My dad spotted it and I started proceedings but for some reason got a form about arriving in the UK and starting work. I sent it straight back untouched with a nice letter saying I thought there was a mistake because I'm British and have never been anywhere else. They sent me a forceful letter back saying I needed to fill it in so being a smart !!!! I filled it in sarcastically all the way because none of the questions were relevant to a British citizen. Oops. I didn't hear back from them for a year
I started chasing it up and they were unable to continue my case because I refused to explain where I'd been before arriving in the UK. Letters went back and forth with me trying to explain and they said they'd look into it. I wrote back every 6 months got a few years getting nothing but acknowledgement letters then got bored. Eventually started writing again and they asked me for various p60 etc forms which I sent (not recorded, can you see my mistakes racking up?) and they never replied. I wrote every 6 months again getting more and more sarcastic (why don't I learn?) and now they say I need to send those forms in again. The ones I don't have. This is further complicated by the fact that my tax office has moved three times and the current office say I need to deal with the old office that has that year's files but the old office say they no longer deal with me and refer me to the new offices.
So. Do I have a cat in hell's chance after this many years?

Total debt July '09: £7,500
Proud to be dealing with my debts but not proud that they are still the same a year on.

Luckily I flit between idiot and anal so I think I have all the letters they sent me but no copies of mine to them. I have a receipt to say something was received by them in May 2002 but it doesn't explicitly state that it was a claim. Then the next letter I have is from November 2002 asking me to fill in the form that didn't make sense. I have regular update letters after this date but none of them actually go anywhere.
Other things to note - I have no idea how to get another copy of the p45 part 1A for that year because the owner of the business has long since closed down and is no longer even in the country. I foolishly assumed that HMRC would be the ones I'd go to if I needed this info.
Thank you for your reply. I am not sure you can help me but to have somebody do something other than play hot potato with me between old and new offices is most refreshing in itself :rotfl:Make £5 a day in July - £105.33/£155

Have you any idea how much maybe involved? If you were on a standard emergency tax code, your pay was constant and you worked the complete tax year the tax deducted would still be about right.0

As far as I can see there was a tax free allowance of £4385 that tax year and I earnt £4565. Taking 20% of the excess means I should have payed around £35 income tax? Not £468.45.
I realise now i've written "less than 6k" in my OP which is quite far off 4.5k! That was just me thinking "less than allowance" and not thinking about the difference in allowance.Make £5 a day in July - £105.33/£155

If you only worked for 6 months of the tax year and were taxed on an emergency week/month one basis the tax would be around the amount you have paid, effectively you would (incorrectly) only have been given 6 months worth of personal allowance.0 -
Thank you Jimmo and mjm3346 for your advice and comments, you've been most helpful. I will write again and try to establish what exists and what doesn't then give it some more thought.Given that you refused to supply information at the time, I'd say no, regardless of the logistics of whether the data still exists or not.
Actually apart from not filling in the immigrant form until the second time it was sent surely I did answer everything I was asked and I'm sure if you'd never been out of the country for more than 4 days you might question the need to fill that form in too
And the reason I have the figures is because for some reason I cannot remember I have a photocopy of the p60. Sadly they won't accept that.Make £5 a day in July - £105.33/£155

Sorry, I don't know why I missed answering that part. I wasn't claiming any state benefits at the time and no I won't run out of steam in following this up. I do need the money quite badly as I've given up my job to be a carer but providing it doesn't cost a fortune to do I would also just like to see it through because I have genuinely spent a fair amount of time on it up to this point, even though it might look like i'm just a sporadic pain in the rear
I've waited this long, what is a few more months!
I'll find out about an appointment at an Enquiry Centre. Thanks again.Make £5 a day in July - £105.33/£155
