Welcome to MSE and particularly the Old Style board. :)

We have an older thread on scrapbooking with lots of useful links that might help you to get started: scrapbooking

Perhaps not oldstyle advise.... but I did a scrapbook for my mother-in-law last Christmas and it didn't cost that much. The most expensive thing was to purchase the book (15 pound)

I got the photos for free by signing up to snapfish (there was a code as well that gave me free p&p) so I used loads of photos that was stored on my computer.
For back ground I used all sorts of different paper that I already had at home. I also bought a few.On one of the backgrounds I used a drawing my son made. I think there is a recomendation on what paper and glue you use since they in the longterm can damage the photoes.
I also used buttons, stickers, ribons, pebles and cut out pictures from christmas/birthday cards.
It also depends a lot what kind of scrapbook theme you are going for.
Wedding, old black & White photos or a family holiday event.

Try to see what items you already got at home and work around that material. It doesn't have to be expensive to look good.
  • hey,

i'm a card maker myself but its similar so i'll try to help.
you can use old cards and cut peices out that you like, just collect any thing you can really. you can use old/broken hair clips for little embellishments.
You can even make your own scrapbook its prob cheaper to buy the card and bind it together yourself.

this site has lots of info and idea's to help you get started https://www.docrafts.co.uk

This site is great but definitely geared toward getting you to buy from their sponsors. However, you can look at other people's layouts and get ideas from them. Some of the sponsors have sales and things where you can stock up.

Also, if you have a market near you there might be a haberdashery or craft store where you can pick up ends of ribbons, buttons, transfers, stamps and ink. If you're near Leeds, there's a lovely little shop near the market that sells lots of crafty things at very reasonable prices and it has papers, cardstock etc too.

There are often bits to be found in places like Poundland, Wilkos, Asda and even the early learning centre. I bought some acid and lignin free paper and card from Asda a while back. It's really nice but it's A4, which is ideal for smaller albums and mounting photos but not ideal if you're used to making bigger layouts.

Top Ginghamy tip: I get people to give me their bottle tops. Cut out a small round piece from a photo, place it in the bottle top, half fill it with clear embossing powder then get a heat gun to it (I use a cook's blowtorch but I wouldn't recommend it - and definitely not for embossing on paper! EEK!) Keep going until it's completely melted and there are no bubbles in it. Don't touch it - leave it to cool, then it looks pretty good on the right kind of layout or card.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

LOL Just realised that it was the thread that Pink linked to that got me started on scrapbooking. I love this site!
