Musgrave Park Hospital Waiting Times

Hi All,

I'll keep this short (unlike the waiting lists). Could any of you tell me how long you waited to see consultant/surgeon at Musgrave Park and then how long after this surgery followed?

I've been referred by orthopaedic ICATS for knee arthroscopy. The consultant at ICATS said it could be anywhere between 9 and 26 weeks - that was March. The novelty of crutches is wearing off!!

Do you have private medical insurance? I know my son had to attend a few years ago and since I have insurance I got an appointment very quick
  • I saw a consultant in July 09 and had a review appointment for Mar 10. This was cancelled by the hospital who said they would re-schedule and send out another. Appointment never appeared so I rang a few weeks ago to see if they'd forgotten about me. I was on the waiting list for appointment but because I rang they were able to offer me a slot before end of this month. I'd still have been on the list if I hadn't picked up the phone - it's worth a try.

Last year the Mrs had a shoulder op, she was first seen at Musgrave end of April and had the op last week of June. She got a call the week before telling her to come in a space had opened up

My husband has been waiting since Dec just to get to see a consultant, he is now on morphine patches for the pain he is in and when he phoned he was told he would not hear from them for 26 weeks as that is the waiting time

Had a knee replacement exactly 3 years ago after waiting 7 years and 2 months----waiting times are a lot better now --but in this economic climate the signs are the lists are going to get worse.

I had an MR scan on my knee in August 2008 at Musgrave which showed I needed a knee arthroscopy - got the results from my GP and am STILL waiting for an appointment with the consultant to discuss the results. My GP has written letters to complain and I have phoned a few times but haven't had any luck. I got a letter on the 28th of November last year to say I had been referred for an orthopaedic assessment (no idea why) and would get an appointment within 9 weeks but surprisingly 28 weeks later I haven't heard anything....The last time I got speaking to my consultant's secretary she said that he only has 2 clinics a month and more urgent cases take priority.

Hospital waiting times are going up and will probably continue to do so as funding is systematically slashed from the Health Service. I always laugh when I hear the politicians state that they will "protect front line staff" - the fact is that the vast majority of staff inside the Health Service are required (perhaps with the exception of the multiple tiers of management that exist for some reason). Take for example secretaries - if there is one less secretary working in a department then documentation stops coming out. GPs don't get discharge letters, appointments are not arranged in a timely fashion or are done incorrectly, when done incorrectly there is nobody available to correct the mistake, results of investigations do not get filed into patient records etc etc etc.

My advice is to write to your MP complaining about the excessive waiting lists and asking why the Department of Finance and Personnel have placed massive cuts to the DHSSPS while not forcing other public sector bodies to take the cuts set out in the Review of Public Administration, especially given the fact that our minister is yet to decide how badly Health is to be hit in the next round of cuts following the emergency budget.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"
