What happens after a year...

of being unemployed..?. I am coming upto a year unemployed and would like to do a course based at my local college in marine shipbuilding which is a part time course every monday from 9-am - 5pm. i am willing to fund this myself. Now i know this is well within the times limit you can study while claiming JSA before it becomes a full time course. My query is, do they make you go on compulsary courses after a year of being unemployed..?. If so is there any scope to work around this so i can stil;l do my part -time course on a Monday should they clash..?.

what happens at 12 months depends on whether you are in an old new deal area or a flexible new deal area.
old new deal.
you would get refered onto this at around 18 months unemployed. if you are already doing a part time course they usually allow you to continue with it.
flexible new deal.
with this you usually see an advisor at the the jobcentre once a month for 6 months from the 6 month mark. at the 12 month mark you get refered to an outside provider. this course lasts for 12 months but is part time. while i cant guarantee it i am pretty sure you would be allowed to continue any course you are doing.
ps things to note are that you must never put the course ahead of getting a job. always check with the jobcentre before enrolling.
you can do a part time college course at any point while unemployed and it will be free.
make sure you are already on a course you want to do before you start nd/fnd because they may not let you start a course after you have started with them on nd/fnd.0 -

OK donna thanks very much, i think i must be in a flexible new deal area as i had to see an advisor at the six month mark..... My dilemma is the course starts in september. Do you think if i pay for it now it would give me more leverage, even though i haven't actually started it yet..?0 -

i didnt mean a 6 month review appointment after 6 months. i mean from that point you see them once a month every month for 6 months. after 6 months seeing them they will then refer you to the outside provider.
you should not have to pay for the college course if you are unemployed. you just go along to enrolment and say you want to do the course and that you are unemployed. can you enrol this early? if you can then get enrolled before they refer you to nd/fnd. if you start with the outside provider before you can get enrolled at college then you should ok it with them first. unfortunately if you get an awkward so'n'so they may say you cant do the college course.
ps heres a tip. if you do a course at college you can join the student union for free. you can then get concessions at various places by showing your student union card.0 -

Doesn't the extra card (only one most places accept for discounts) still cost £5? Just to be sure.Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott
It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

The NUS extra card is £10 now, but you can get quite a few discounts locally if you show your the student card from your local college.

it is a few years since i had a student card so i guess they could be charging now. i often notice at places were the prices are shown that they often state student price on presentation of a valid student union card. i used to get in the cinema for less with mine.0
