Digital camera.

I'm looking for a digital camera. I'm off to new york which is principally what the camera is going to be bought for.

Should i wait till i get there? Or buy one over here? I am a bit worried about the warranty side of things if i purchase one over there.

Any good deals about now? Don't really know how much to spend but i quite like the look of the casio exilim and the canon one. Something with a big screen and smallish?

Also whats the pro's/con's of having a rechargeable battery built in to the camera?

Thanks

  • Can't recommend any particular camera but can comment on the batteries.

I would go one for one which takes standard size batteries (AA or AAA). These are cheap and you can carry a spare set around and have another set charging at home or hotel. If you get get caught out a set of (non rechargeable) ones can be bought anywhere and your camera is back up and running right away.

A camera with built in batteries is out of action until you can recharge it.

I bought mine in the duty free at Gatwick. It is a Nikon coolpix 3200. It is a great little camra, zoom lens, easy to use and internal memory. Can deleat the pictures you don't want and small-fits into my bag.The only thing you need to be aware of is - it takes 2x AA battries which tend to just go at the wrong moment so always carry 2 spare.
Have a great holiday and take lots of photo's... Best wishes...

    Spring begins on 21st March.
  • Thanks but what about getting it in new york rather than here?

Buying on holiday is fine as long as the product does not develop a fault. It is a long way to go for repairs and replacements.Only you can decide on the risk! Camera's can last for years so you need to think carefully and make the choise to suit your needs. I have had my camera for 2 years with no problems and use it often. Some people will say there is no need for a camera as phones have them built in! Save the extra equipment and weight!
    Best wishes...

I bought my camera in NY when I went in 2005

I bought the olympus C770UZ origianlly from pixmania before I went and ended up returning it as it was faulty it took 3 months to get a refund so I wont recomend pixmania to anyone. the costt was about £400 at the time.

I had checked the web for places in NY to buy from and I decided on B and H photo video or J and R as they had been recomended to me by freinds. I ended up in BH and the camera cost me £250 so I bought an extra battery, memory card and a few other bits and still saved a fortune. I even got an international warrenty with it.
The only problem is BH is owned by a Jewish family and they are closed on Saturdays. the shop is incredible you can buy anything in there and ALL the staff know what they are doing and can offer some excelent advice.

as for a built in battery dont get one like that, get one with a removeable battery some people like the AA battery route and they are ok as you can go buy a set pretty much anywhere but really you should use rechargables to save money and the environment or somthing. My camera uses an olympus battery that cost me about £20 for the extra one and I got a few more off ebay for £10 they are ok they last ages about 2 hours of the camera being left on I forget to turn it off sometimes but I can get through a football match only turning it off at half time with some spare. my dad has an older olympus that uses AA's and he only gets 1 half out of a set of 4 2300mah rechargeables. the propriatory batterys are a pain but they also allow the camera to be slightly smaller and lighter as 2 AA's are heavier and take more space than most camera batteries.

Using a camera phone isnt an option yeah use it to get the odd photo to show mates when your out and about but not really good enough to print from even with the sony ericson camera phones flashes are useless and you will take loads of photos NY is a stunning place. and phones cant take a good night shot for toffee so buy a camera.

try to avoid the shops on times square especailly the ones that pull you in off the street they will eat up 2 hours of your time and try to sell you every accessory going for the camera. Do your research over here go to Jessops get a feel for the diferent cameras and see whihc ones you like, I would normally avoid the electronics companies like Casio and Sony and buy one made by a camera company but the sony cameras can take good photos and some look good.
  • What is an international warranty? Would i have to send it off for repair?

  • The one thing you don't want to do is send your camera off for repair while you're on holiday in NY and miss all those unrepeatable photos.

Buying in NY would mean you could take it straight back to the shop if it went wrong and hopefully get it fixed or replaced on the spot.
  • Yeah but what about when i'm back in this country?

  • Yeah but what about when i'm back in this country?

It depends how important your NY photos are to you. If you would be very upset if you didn't have pictures of your visit buy the camera over there.

If the camera is more of a long term purchase, you will be using it a lot when you come back and the NY photos are not that important to you buy it over here.

This is all assuming it does go wrong, which is fairly unlikely. I understand they are pretty reliable.
  • The camera isnt just for my trip to new york so buying in this country would be better? What kind of % saving is there to be had with getting it over there?
