tax return

I registered as self employed last year and had a letter in October saying I may need to complete a tax return and they would let me know which one I needed to complete, I haven't heard anything from them since.

Should I just wait until they let me know I need to complete one, or should I contact them to find out?

If I don't need to complete one yet that's fine, but I thought they would have asked me to by now.

I went self employed at beginning of March this year and got the same letter and shortly after a tax return, i presume i have to fill it in for just a month which seems a bit pointless especially as i didn't start properly for a few weeks anyway. Perhaps a quick phone call may make it all clear for you, i think i will call as well. :(

You will need to self assess by 31 Jan 2011 and pay any tax due by this date. The onus is on you to assess, so you need to contact HMRC and find out your UTR so that you can register online for your return.

  • I phoned them and apparently they sent the tax return in April but I never received it. I have registered to complete online so I'm just waiting for the pin number to access it now.
