I think some of you people trying to talk up the market maybe starting to panic with all these threads trying to tell us how the government will do anything to protect house prices.
panic???? you obviously don't read the forum properly

when you say 'people trying to talk up the market' did you mean threads like these... or did these people not have clue in the first place or just have a hope that wasn't ever going to turn into reality

No one knows whats reality yet. I just notice the many threads over the past couple of weeks by Turnbull trying to talk up the market. The same bears have been trying to talk down the market for a great length of time now so seeing new threads by them is nothing new.

I'm not talking the market up. I don't even own a house. I'm just being realistic.

The articles based on idea's nothing more. A couple of weeks before the pre budget last year the papers were saying VAT was going up to 20%. This idea got shelved for the NI raise a few days before.

It will be the same for CGT. How many people own a 2nd home? How many people can vote? Do you really think the government are going to go back on their idea's because a few % of the those that can vote don't like them.

If the idea does come in then I suspect it was always in the pipe line anyway.

The suggestion that bears have got to understand anything is a bit of a nonsense. I suspect the reality is that bears should wait for the facts before getting exicted just like you should.

Most policies - whether it be property prices

Unfortunately that's a myth that people try to convince themselves is the case.

The policy has been to encourage ownership.

You haven`t been around long have you.

Chucky would be competing against a cast of thousands to win that accolade.

just to help us understand your point

maybe you could quote the number of baby boomers (presumably those born 1945 to 1965) compared to those born 1966 to (say ) 1992 and those born before 1945 just to show how much the baby boomers dominate the voting figures.

According to the ONS (link), the total adult population of the UK in 2010 is estimated to be 49,120,572 (that is those aged 18+).

Of these, 17,432,458 are aged 44-65 (Baby Boomers) and 18,725,897 are aged 22-43 (The Alphabetti Spaghetti Generations).

    Surprised? I am!

    So where is the discrepancy?

Well the baby boom is named because of increased fertility after WW2 and also because of reduced fertility in the 1970s. Perhaps fertility went up again in the 1980s.

Also, someone who was born 65 years ago has had a lot more opportunities to die than someone born 22 years ago. Many more people will be still alive that were born in the 70s and 80s than were born in the 40s or 50s.

Perhaps the baby boomers won't be as potent a force in the next 20 years as people expect. Clearly they have been over the past 15-20 years (President Clinton, Tony Blair, President Sarkozy and Chancellor Merkel being examples of baby boomers) but then we'd expect people in their 40s and early 50s to be at the peak of their careers. Probably in 10 or so years, baby boomers will stop dominating the political sphere in the same way that they no longer dominate the world of pop music.

For the record, David Cameron is 43 (ie not a Baby Boomer) and President Obama is 48. Perhaps the Baby Boomers' time is passing.

This is what bears need to understand. Most policies - whether it be property prices, healthcare or social spending - will be influenced by and designed to appease this huge demographic bulge at the expense of those unfortunate enough to be younger. I've been saying for weeks that there's no way Cameron would risk upsetting second home owners and BTLers in this age group. And here we are.

Isn't this always the way. Announce something really cutting, then water it down and everyone is happy because it isn't as cutting as first thought. So it goes through without much protest because its not as bad as could be.
